JULIA A. FLOOD, OF BOSTON, MASSAOEUSETTSi GAG-E FOR SE WING-MACHINE S.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Janfi', 1908.
Application filed A'pril.25.1907. Serial No. 370.167.
To all whom it mo'yconcem:
Be itluiown that I, JULIA A. FLOOD, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Boston, county of Suffolk, (ommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a gage for sewing machines which is adapted to be used for both wide and narrow heins.
In dressmaking and other like work it is often desirable to make wide horns and the only ga e in common use for domestic sewing mac ines is the one only adapted to narrow work.
My gage is intended to be used for both Wide and narrow work and it consists of the structure l'iereinaffter described and claimed.
Figure 1 a perspective view'of the showing its application to the plate of the machine and Fig. 2 is a cross section across the flat bar in rear of the guide.
The flat bar A'is preferably divided off into inches and fractions thereof and at one end it is attached to the plate of the machine by means of the screw using the screw hole which is commonly found in domestic machines for securing attachments. The work is guided by a guide :3 which is adapted to slide on the flat bar so that there will be nothing projecting beneath the under surface of the bar. The slide is composed of a ertical flange 1) which acts to guide the work with jaws extending back from flange and adapted to clasp the edges of the bar.
Each jaw is composed of a horizontal plate b which extends at right angles to the horizontal flangebtturned back from the lower edge of the flange b and the flange 5 is turned down over the edge of the bar to form a jaw.. Extending u from the flange are the two flanges b,-t'iese flanges being separated by a space sufliciently wide to allow the head of the screw 0 to pass. The flanges 'b are unitedby a clamping screw 7) by which the jaws are set against the edges of the bar. and a nut 11 is provided into which the end of the screw extends.
An opening is formed in the center of the flange I) through which passes the head ofthe screw 0 and thus it will be seen that the slide Will pass entirely over the screw head and may be worked u close to the presser foot (.1
or back at the en of the bar, as desired. The
'- screw b when loosened releases the jaws and The device is adapted to be used on the va rious kinds of domestic machines for either wide or narrow work. It can be quickly ad.-
j usted and is adapted to be cheaply manufac- 1 tured.
The edges of the flat bar ar rounded as here shown whereby theyare adapted to be seized by the jaws of the slide to hold the latter firmly in place but they may be of any other suitable form.
1. The herein described gage" for sewing machines consisting of a flat bar having an opening at one end for the'passage of a fastening screw and a transverse guide adapted to slide on said bar and l'iaying aws which clasp the edge of said bar and substantially flush with the under face of the same and a tightening screw connecting said jaws;
2. The herein described gage for sewing machines consisting of a flat barhaving an opening at one end-for the passage of a fastening screw and a guide adapted to slide on said bar, said guide having a vertical flange with a central opening to admit the passage of the screw head and jaws adapted to clasp the edges of said bar extending, back from said flange with a space between them wide enough for the passage of the screw head and I tening screw and a guide adapted to slide:
on said bar, said guide having a vertical flange with a centralopemng to admit the head of the screw and aws-extendmg back from said flange and adapted to clasp the edges of the bar each jaw having a vertical flange separated by a space sufliciently wide to allow of the passage of the screw head and a screw passing through sa d flanges tor clamping said jaws.
Si ned by me at Boston, this 20th day of April A. n, 1901.
JULLA A. FLOOD.
