Description

@uitrit 'tsts @einem @frn IMEEovENENT 1N EAME-GEIMNEY CLEANERS.
Y FREDERICK ASHLEY, 0F NEW YORK. Letters Patent No. `59,808, dated llfovemer 20, 1866.
A SPECIFICATION- ro ALL wnoM ir MAY coNcEEN:
Be it known that I, F. ASHLEY, of the city and county, State of New York, have invented a new and usefl improvement in Cleaners for Lamp Chimneys, Bottles, tc., and I do hereby declare that the following is a ful clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, rei erence being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification:
V`This invention relates to a cheap and eicint instrument or device for the cleansing of the inside of lam` chimneys,='bottles,'decanters, and other hollow articles, and the present invention simply consists in so securin` the sponge, cloth, worsted yarn, or other lpad used, of whatever material it may be made, that is suitable fo cleansing the surface of the chimney, bottle, or other article or vessel, to and in th reception, that they can be readily attached to and detached from the same at pleasure, thereby enabling ,on material to be substituted for another, or the materials used to be washed or cleansed when so desired and again used, the importance and advantages of which are obvious.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement in cleaners for lamp chimneys is illustrated.
Figure l' being a plan or top view of the same.
Figure 2, an edge view; and
Figure 3, an end view.
'v Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents a cleaner more especially adapted to the cleansing of lamp chimneys, and i: of that class of such cleaners which consist simply of a holder or arm, B. bent or curved at one end, c, ighere the sponge, cloth, or other material which is used, is secured.
rIlhis arm, B, at its end, having the sponge, is, in this invention,` made with two jaws, D D2, one, D7 forming a part of the arm B, and the other, D2, hung thereto so as to besusceptible of being opened therefrom and closed thereon, at pleasure, it being held closed bymeans of a spiral spring, E, properly "arranged therefor between the two jaws, at their inner end.
In and between these jaws, D D2, the sponge, cloth, or other material which is used is placed, by rst opening the jaws D2 from thejaw D when allowing it to close. upon the sponge, etc. It then firmly secures and holds the said sponge by the action of the spiral spring E, as is obvious without any further explanation.
To increase the hold upon the sponge, cloth, etc., placed in the jaws D D2, I provide one jaw, D2, with a set of teeth, a, which, in connection with the concave shape of the inside face of the other jaw, D, act to more firmly nip and secure the sponge, etc., as is evident.
From the above description it is plainly apparent that by any construction of the holder for a sponge it can be readily attached thereto or removed therefrom, and then reinserted, or a piece or pad or bunch of cloth or other material substituted therefor, thus allowing the sponge or other pad to be washed or cleansed, 'when e holders provided for thei so desired or necessary, a quiteimportant advantage and desideratum.
Although I have hereindescribed one mode. by which the holder for the sponge, etc., of a lamp-chimney or other similar cleaner can be constructed to allow the sponge, etc., to `'be attached to and detached from the holder' when so desired, I wish it to be distinctly understood that I- do not intend to limit myself to any one particular construction of the holder, 'noruto any one particular style of lamp-chimney cleaners, the present invention simply consisting in so constructing the holder or holders of a cleaner fonlamp chimneys, etc., that the sponge or other cleaning material used c'an be attached to or detached from the' holder' or holders therefor, at pleasure, for the purpose hereinabove stated. f
Among some of the many obvious modifications which can be made in my invention without departing from its principle may be here mentioned. The following, viz:
1st. .The jaws can be both hung to the main bar B, so as to be susceptible of being opened from and closed upon each other. l l y 2d. The two jaws may be made so as to have sufficient spring to close upon each other, and thus bind and secure the sponge, etc., between them, while at the same time lthey can be opened from each other; and
3d.A They can be held together by screw bolts and nuts, or other fastening devices suitable for-being readily fastened and unfastened, at pleasure. V
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- So constructing the holder or holders for the sponge, ietc., of a lamp-chimney or other similar cleaners that the said sponge, etc., can be attached thereto or detached therefrom, at pleasure, substantially as and for the purpose described The above specification of my invention, signed by me this 10th day of August, 1866.
