. UNITED STATES PATENT Er ca.
SHOULDER-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,127, dated January 1 1, 1898.
' Application filed. March 16,1897. Serial No.627,836. (No model.) Patented in England March 10,1896, No. 5,361.
To all, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZA THOMSON, a citizen of Great Eritaimand a resident of 2 yndham Street, Bryanston Square, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohest-Expanders, (patented in Great Britain, No. 5,361, dated March 10, 1896,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin g a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to shoulder-braces; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved apparatus for this purpose which is adapted to be connected with the body of the person wearing the same, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of myimprovem out are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, in which- Figure 1 is a. front and Fig. 2 a back view of my improved brace and showing the method of the operation thereof.
In constructing my improved brace I provide a collar a, which is adapted to fit the neck and also wider at the sides, where it fits over the shoulders, than at the front and baclc.
The collar a is made to fasten in front with any suitable fastening device a, and I also provide two front braces b and two back braces 19, which are connected with the collar a at the front and back, respectively, and
the lower ends of which are connected with a waistband c, which is provided with any suit able fastening device 0' at the front thereof.
Astrap d is connected to each of the braces b and passed under the arms, and the rear ends thereof are connected with a pad d, attached to the back braces 19, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
A short strap d connects the strap cl with the waistband at each side under the arms and helps to keep said straps in position, and the braces 22 and the straps d are provided with devices whereby they may be adjusted in length, as shown at b and d respectively, and these devices preferably consist of ordinary buckles, though other devices, such as sliding loops, may be employed.
By means of my improved brace the following advantages are obtained: The collar prevents the unsightly projection of the chin which usually happens when the shoulders aredrawn back by the ordinary braces, while thedisagreeable tightness, which to some persons is unbearable, is avoided by the attachment of the front straps Z; to the collar instead of passing them directly around the shoulders and under the arms.
My improvement is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended and is also comparatively inexpensive, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. An improved brace, consisting of a collar, a waistband, front and back braces connected with said collar, aiid said waistband, a back pad with which said back braces are connected, and straps extending from the front straps at each side around beneath both arms, and connected with said pad, substantially as shown and described. 2. An improved brace, consisting of a collar, a waistband, front and back braces connected with said collar, and said waistband, a back pad with which saidlback braces are connected, and straps extending from the front straps at each side around beneath both arms, and connected with said pad, and short straps extending from said straps beneath the arms to the waist-strap, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of July, 1896.
ELIZA THOMSON.
