UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. VAN ORDEN, OF CEDAR GROVE, NEW JERSEY.
SKIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,557, dated'J'anuary 4, 1898.
Application led March 24, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. VAN ORDEN, of Cedar Grove, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Skirt, of which the following is a specification. Y
This invention relates to a skirt which is so constructed that the objectionable fullness over the hips is avoided, while at the same time the fullness at the back is maintained. To this effect I provide the skirt with a front section which is cut away at its upper end and here connected to the waistband by a series of bands or straps, which also serve to sustain additional short skirts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective View of my newlyinvented skirt. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same with the waistband omitted.
The letter a represents'the waistband, b the front section, and c the rear section, of the skirt. The rear section c is of the usual length and extends up to the waistband, to which it is secured. The front section b, however, is shortened 011 top and reaches only to a point below the hips. Straps d serve to secure the upper edge of this front section to the waistband a, around which they are looped. These straps are extended along the under side of the skirt and below their point of attachment, as at d', to form tabs having fastenings d2, that support an additional short skirt or un derskirt. A second set of straps e, having fastenings e and depending. from waistband a, serve to support a second underskirt, so that thus all skirts will be suspended from the waistband at a distance below the same.
Serial No. 628,945. (No model.)
The back portions of the underskirts are sustained bystraps f, suspended from waistband a below the solid rear section c.
The front section b should be considerably wider than the rear section c, so as to extend around the front and sides of the wearer. In this way the fullness will be taken from the hips, but will be maintained at the back by means of the gathered full-sized section c.
All the parts of the skirt are permanently connected to each other, so that there is no objectionable buttoning and so that the skirt can be put on or-taken off in the usual manner.
It will be seen that by my inventionI provide a garment having an open-work front and sides which will not gather over the hips or form any objectionable fullness over the same and which also serves to suspend the other nether garments at a point below the hips. At the same time the fullness on the back is maintained, and thus the combined eect of the open front andfull back will be to greatly improve the figure of the wearer. I lVhat I claim is- A skirt having a waistband, a solid rear section and open front section, straps for connecting the front section to the waistband and terminating in tabs, fastening devices on said tabs, and rear straps depending from the waistband beneath the solid rear section, substantially as speciiied.
