Description
EL LA M. HOLTON. ABDOMINAL SUPPORTERS 71 Patented Nov. 7, 1876.
INVENTOR WITNESSES UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLA MOODY HOLTON, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT lN ABDOMINAL SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,153, dated November 7, 1876; application filed October 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA MOODY HOLTON, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Supporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon,'which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the class of support ers which are made to adapt themselves to the varying shape and size of the abdomen by means of elastic gores and lacings; and the improvement consists in the employment of extension-pieces, by means of which the size of the supporter can be greatly varied, as well as the novel arrangement of the parts.
Figure 1 is a front and side view of my supporter, and Fig. 2 a view of the back and side.
It is made in three pieces, the front piece D, and two back pieces, E E. These are joined together by lacings at the middle of the back and at the sides. The front piece I) is made of one piece, and fitted to the figure, so as to support the base of the abdomen by means of the darts (3, located one on each side. These gather in the bottom, and give the proper roundness and fullness. It is provided on both sides with extension-pieces B B. These are strips of cloth with rows of eyelet-holes sewed to the front piece D, just back of the row of eyelet-holes in edge of same. One or more of these extension-pieces may be used, each strip being made wide enough so that its row of eyeletholes will project beyond the overlying row, and each extension-piece may be sewed either-to the one immediately above it, or they may be made of such a width that one seam, b, will fasten all of them.
The sides of D are cut sloping inward from the points f f, near the top, to the bottom, and also sloping inward from the same points to the top. This makes the front piece wider at the top than at the bottom, with the upper corners cut off. The extension-pieces are cut to conform to the shape of the edges. The
back pieces E E are made with similar extension-pieces, but they are are only attached to the edge of each piece which comes at the back. Extension-pieces may be attached to the side edges of the same; but I prefer to place them at the back only, and I make them much wider than the extension-pieces attached to the front piece D. In this case, I can lace the row of eyelet holes a a, on one side with either a a or a c on the other side, or a a with a a, and thus adjust the supporter to any size that will be required.
The sides of the back pieces E E are made with the same sloping edges as those of the front piece, sloping from the point f inward toward the top and bottom.
Elastic gorin gs A A are inserted at the sides, fitting the triangular space below the points f f and attached to the back pieces E E. The eyelet-holes at thesides of E, below f, are worked in the edge of the elastic goring. By this arrangement of the eyelet-holes, the upper ones on one side receding, the front piece D can be easily adjusted to the contour of the an abdominal supporter, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The side laoings, constructed with the angular sides, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the front piece D, back pieces E, adjustable side lacings, elastic gorings A, and extension-pieces B, substan-- tially as described.
In testimony that I claim the'foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELLA MOODY BOLTON.
