UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST F. BERTRAM, OF WELLSVILLE, OHIO.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,813, dated March 21, 1893.
Application filed April 25. 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST F. BERTRAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellsville, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable vothers skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in shoes and particularly in that class of shoes wherein a vent is provided at the front of the shoe, along the edges of which are set eyelets or other lace holding devices and the object of my invention is to provide an improved tab for the front of such shoes whereby the putting on of the same is greatly facilitated.
In order that my improvements may be the better understood, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings a shoe made according to my invention, in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of the upper portion or upper of the shoe and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of the same.
In these views 1 represents the vamp of the ordinary form, to which is stitched the upper, comprising the pieces 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, composed alternately of elastic cloth webbing and leather. Thus it will be seen that there are two elastic gores, 2, and 3, in each side of the upper, which gores are joined together at adjacent edges by narrow leather strips 4, 4, two
Serial No. 430,592. (No model.)
of such strips being used, one on the outside and one on the inside of the shoe. The two i rear gores 3, 3, are in like manner joined together by narrow strips 5, 5, ot' leather in every way similar to the strips 4, 4.
In order to facilitate the putting on of the shoe, I have provided tabs 7, 8, at the front and back of the shoe, respectively, that at the back being of the ordinary well known form. The tab '7, at the front of the shoe, consists of a narrow band of leather or other sufficiently strong and flexible material joined at its ends to the upper ends of the facings 6, 6, on each side of the vent and forminga connection between them, whereby the shoe may be more readily put on, this form of tab being much more readily seized by the lingers than is the ordinary form seen at 8.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a shoe having a vent at the front and lacing strips at each side thereof, the combination with such strips of a continuous strip secured at its ends to the upper ends of said lacing st rips and extending across said vent, said continuous strip forming a tab for convenience in putting on the shoe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony' that 'I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 16th day of March, A. D. 1892.
AUGUST F. BERTRAM.
