SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,483, dated November 28, 1893.

Be it known that I, VIRGINIA I-I. OBERLY, of the city of Washingtou,in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide in corsets improved devices for the back lacings, whereby the use of all permanent metallic parts is dispensed with and the corset cloth or frame may be washed without danger of disfiguring the fabric by rust markings; and whereby greater ease and comfort of the wearer may be gained.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a rear view through a section of a corset, showing one form of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a rear View, showing a modified form thereof.

Referring to the figures on the drawings, l indicates one part of a corset, and 2 the other part.

3 indicates the terminalstaypiece pockets, and 4 the stiffening material ol steels therein.

5 indicates lacersta-y pieces, which consist of stiifening material, preferably steel inclosed within a cloth cover or pocket whereby the lacer stay pieces may be conveniently secured to the terminal stay pieces by suitable open work fabric. In Fig. I of the drawings'zigzag tapes 7 are illustrated as provided for this purpose.

Regularly arranged openings 8 between the tapes are provided for the reception of a lacer 9, similar to the manner in which metal guarded eyelets have been heretofore provided for the like purpose.

In Fig. 2 of the drawings lace work is illus trated as forming the connecting fabric between the terminal stay pieces and the lacer stay pieces. The laceris passed through regularly arranged interstices in the lace next to the inner edges of the lacer stay'pieces.

The purpose for which the open work fabric is employed is to secure a variety of openings for the passage of the lacer. I regard the lace as preferable material for this purpose, because of the numerous openings which it aords, as well as for its strength and for ornamental purposes.

The steels of the lacer stay pieces are adapted to be slipped into the pockets or coverings which hold them, and to be readily removed when desired, slits, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, being provided for this purpose. It will be perceived, therefore, that by my invention adequate provision for lacing a corset in the back is provided; and that when the stiffening material is withdrawn the remaining frame consists only of ordinary washable fabric.

In corsets of the ordinary kind a stiffening piece is used in proximity to metallic eyelets; but the oiiice of the stiffening piece is only to hold the garment erect, while the tension of the lacer is upon the fabric itself and not upon the stiifeuing piece.

By the use of my invention I not only secure a more perfect distribution of the strain, but prevent the tearing or stretching of the fabric composing the frame of the garment.

I do not desire to limit myself to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, because they maybe somewhat modified within the scope of my invention.

What I claim is I. A corset having adjacent edges adapted to be secured together provided withopen work -fabric secured to the edges and lacer stay piece pockets extending continuously from the top to the bottom of the corset and secured to the open work fabric, whereby the lacer may be passed through the open work fabric and around each of thelacer stay piece pockets, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A corset provided with a terminal stay piece pocket extending continuously from the top to the bottom thereof, open work fabric secured to said terminal stay piece pocket, a lacer stay piece pocket extending cont-inuously from the top to the bottom of the corset and secured to the open work fabric, whereby the lacer may be passed through said open work fabric and around said lacer stay piece pocket, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
