CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 441,077, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed October 20, 1888. Serial No. 288,623. (No model.) 4
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA THOMPSON, a citi' zen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Supporters and Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledv in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combined corset and abdominallsupporter; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, which are fully disclosed in the following description and claim.
In the drawings, Figures l and 2 are front and side views, respectively, of a corset having my improvements embodied therein; and Fig. 3 is a view of the same, showing the parts extended in one plane.
The object of my invention is to provide a corset which may be used in cases where a corset and an abdominal supporter are desired of soft material, which can be worn during pregnancy, and which can be changed to conform to the varying size of the wearer during that period, and which can be reduced to adapt it to the use of the wearer after confinement.
In the drawings, AA are the two front portions of the main body of the corset, and E the back of the corset. The front of the corset is preferably formed of knitted material, which is soft and elastic and easily adapts it- The back may be of any textile material not elastic. The front portions may be provided with any preferred fastening means. I show in this instance the usual eyelet and busk strips, which is the preferred mode of fastening. The rear edges of the front portions A A are each porvided with an eyelet-strip a3. The back is provided at its edges with lacing-strips e e, and between these with supplementary lacing-strips e e. The back can be secured to .the front portions by its lacing-strips e c or by the strips e e', as the size or comfort of the wearer may dictate.
In order to provide for a very great enlargement of the corset, I provide at each side the intermediate lacing-strip F, provided on each side with a row of eyelets for lacing. These strips may be inserted between the edges as and e and laced, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3,0r they may be laced to the strips e of the back. These intermediate lacing-strips F may also be removed when desired to reduce the size of the corset. The front of the corset extends downward to cover the abdomen, and is provided at its lower edge with straps B B of any suitable or non-elastic material. These straps are attached to the corset for a portion of their length and are designed to assistin supporting the abdomen, and each of the rear portions of the same are adjustably attached to one of the lacing-strips at the back of the corset. In Figs. l and 3 I show these straps as provided with triangular slits on their lower edges, and a cord or tape G passes through eyelets arranged on opposite sides of said slits, and at the back forms the means for securing the straps; but I do not limit myself to this construction, as a plain band or strap may be used, as shown in Fig. 2.
The corset is preferably provided with shoulder-straps, as shown.
In order to so make the breast portions as to support the breast-s in an easy and :comfortable manner, I provide the knitted 'fabric with a strengthening-band a4 just below the breast by attaching a strip of non-elastic material, or, preferably, by means of one or more rows of stitches, which prevent the yielding of the material at this point. I also provide the upper edges of the knitted breast portion with a lace or cord a", by means of which the upper edges of the corset may be held in place. This construction adapts the corset for use as a nursing-corset, as by loosening the laceor cord a5 the elastic portion of the front may be forced down to give access to the breast.
lVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A corset having elastic portions A A, provided with lacing-strips a3, back E, having lacing-strips c e e e', the removable intermediate lacing-strips F F, the abdominal supporting portion, and supporting-straps B, adjust-ably connected to the back of the corset.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMMA THOMPSON.
