Description

(No Model.)
H. B. CURRY.
SPUR.
No. 595,047y Patented Deo. 7,1897.
TTR-l' UNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY B. CURRY, OF TROY, WEST VIRGINIA.
SPUR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of `Letters Patent No. 595,047, dated December 7, 1897. Application filed April 23, 1897. Serial No. 633,422. (No model.)
To LZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY B. CURRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Gilmer and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spurs,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a horsemans spur to be attached to the stirrup instead of to the foot.
It consists of a case, shaft, rowel, and spring, with the necessary pivots and screws, so constructed and arranged as to open and shut like the blade of a knife, together with a plate to be used in fastening the device to the stirrup when such plate is required. It may be made of any suitable metal, plain or ornamental, as may be desired, and is herein more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side v'iew with the spur extended. Fig. 2 is a plan showing the parts and their relations; and Fig. 3 is a side view with the spur closed, a portion of the case being broken away more clearly to show the parts.
The same letters indicate the same parts in each figure.
In the drawings, A is a thin metal case, consisting of the two sides and top, open at the bottom and ends.
B is the shank or arm which carries the rowel C, one end pivoted in the case by the screw F.
D is a springinside the case, one end secured at the top, the other end curved down, pressing upon the pivoted end of the shank as it revolves, engaging the offset ct when opened, as shown by the dotted lines, and so holding it in place, which spring may be either round or square.
E is the pivot of the rowel, enabling it to revolve in the jaws ZJ h of the shank and projecting on one side, so as to form a finger holder e, with which to open and shut the device.
F and F are screws passing through the case and with which to attach it to the stirrup. His a metalplate to be used when required in attaching the device where the stirrup is such that screws cannot be directly inserted.
In this event the spur-case A is placed on one side and the plate I-I on the other, and small bolts with nuts are used instead of the screws F and F. A corner of the case A is cut away at CZ to receive the finger-holder.
The operation of the device is similar to that of a pocket-knife. The spur being attached to the stirrup, preferably to open downward, is open when in use and closed when not. Its utility is that the spur remains as a part of the horse aecoutrements, while the foot is relieved of an annoyance, and that the rowel is out of the way when not wanted.
Having described my device, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a stirrup, of a spur consisting of a containing-ease with sides and top continuous, of a reversible shank pivoted to shut into the case, the shank carrying a rowel at its free end, of an interior spring, and of a rowel-pivot having a projecting n ger-hold, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2. The combination with a stirrup, of a spur consisting of a containing-case, pivoted reversible shank, carrying a rowel at its free end, a spring, a rowel-pivot with a fingerholder, and with an opposing plate and bolts, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY B. CURRY.
