SNAP HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,135, dated October 15, 1889. Application filed February 12, 1889. Serial No. 299,618. (No model.)
To all whom itmag concern.-
Be it known that I ANDREW JAoKsoN DENNIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Williamson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap- Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in that class of devices known as snap-hooks, and it consists in the novel I 5 construction of the same, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the snap-hook, consisting of the hook portion 6, the spring d, and the flat plate or body I), which, with the portion e, is formed integral. This plate is pro 0 vided with two or more perforations or openings a a, between which and on the plate I) is arranged one or more spurs c c, which latter stand vertically and at right angles to the plate aforesaic 3 5 The shank A is practically flat and provided with perforations a a only, between T which are sharp spurs o 0. These spurs rise from a table or plane surface, at the end of which is an abrupt shoulder b, and beyond 0 this shoulder is adepressed plane 12 which extends to the point of curvature of the hook e. The spring d is formed with an obtuse angular shank, the rear end of which abuts snugly against the shoulder 19, and the free end of the spring is caught against a shoulder b of the hook-point, as shown in Fig. 1.
I am aware that Patent numbered 222,7 91 shows a device having a shouldered pointed hook provided with a shank which is perforated longitudinally and vertically, and also provided with studs to enter apertures in a trace or other strap. I am also aware that Patent numbered 283,719 shows a rope-hitch composed of a curved three-eyed buckle provided with a stud. These devices I broadly disclaim, as neither of them show a flat shankhook provided with the shoulders and flat bearing-surface or sharp spurs for biting the rope.
It will be observed by reference to Fig. 10f the annexed drawings that these spurs are forced into and bite the rope f after said rope is passed through one opening, then over the top of the spur, and finally through the next opening. Thus it will be seen that the harder one pulls on the rope the tighter the spurs bite the same. At the same time the rope can be quickly removed therefrom by drawing the rope outwardly from said spurs. The openings can be made square.
It will be observed that the shank of my snap hook is straight and perforated only vertically, and that the bars between the perforations are solid or imperforated. By my invention I am able to cast a snaphook with an elongated straight shank having the perforations through it and the spurs O integral and without coring.
That I claim is The within-described improved article of manufacture, consisting of a straight shankhook having two tables in different planes, a shoulder Z) at the junction of the two tables, the vertical apertures a a through the main portion of the flat shank, spurs o 0 between the two apertures, an obtuse angular spring d, secured to the shank and tapered, as described, and a shoulder b formed on the i11- ner side of the hook c, all constructed and adapted to operate in the manner and for the 0 purposes described.
