EDWARD A. FRANKLIN.
Improvement in Cbtton-Ble Ties.
N0. 126,687, PatentedMayl4,1872.
AM. H1070 -LITHDGRAPHIO ca M 1: 580/15 53 Pmn-sss.)
EDWARD A. FRANKLIN, OF BRENHAM, TEXAS.-
IMPROVEMENT I N COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,687, dated May 14, 1872.
.T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. FRANK- LIN, of Brenham, in the county of Washington and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cotton -Bale Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of my invention with straps attached. Fig. 2 is a view of the same with straps removed.
My invention has relation to cott0n-bale ties; and consists in the novel construction of the loop-plate, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the metallic plate to which the looped ends of the metallic band B are fastened. This plate has two apertures, 'G C. Before the band is put onthe bale the end 0 of the same is passed through 0 and bent over to form a loop. The upper edge of G is inclined downward from left to right. At the upper part of the left end of the slot 0 an acute-angled recess, 61, is
formed. The right end of said slot is of a rectangular form, and provides a small recess, d, into which the right edge of the band slips when attached to the plate. E represents a slot or cleft cut from the edge of the plate into the aperture 0. This entering slot or cleft approximates in form to the letter Z, the lines or edges thereof running at right angles to each other.
In attaching the band after it has been passed around the bale, a loop is formed, and, the plate-being bent up so as to open the slot E, is passed through said slot and moved toward the recessd. This recess allows the loop to pass beyond the slot, after which the strain draws the loop back over the short side of said recess, and causes its edge to enter the recess 01'. A blow of a hammer on the open slot E closes it. The object of the peculiar form of said slot is to prevent the side of the plate from being bent out by the strain, and the band thereby released. The angular recess shown at e is designed to allow the band to be inserted in the aperture 0 with greater facility.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The tie-plate A herein described, provided with the slots 0 and G and zigzag or transversely-shouldered enterin g-cleft E, constructed and operated in the manner andfor the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD A. FRANKLIN. Witnesses:
A. MEYER, I. MEYER.
