IMPnovnD BAG-FASTENBR.
- tterlnhule referrer tuin there mitm what mit mrliingpatt nf the time'.
TO ALL WHOM II MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, LEVIH. COLBORN, ofthe city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain newand improved Bag-Fastener; -ond Ido hereby declare the following to be-a full, and clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a port of this specification, and in whichv Figure I is a plan of my improved fastener.
Figure II is \a"detav.il view of lock-plate.
' Theinatureof my invention` consists in the combination of e.' lck-plate with n chain, one end of thc chain being permanently connected'to the lock-plete, and the other end passing freely through a hole in the lock-plate, on one side of which is cu-t a notch or slot, into which the links ofthe chain may catch, when the chain is made to cncirclethe netklof-a baglor other articleand therebv securely'tie or-bind the same Like lettere referto Iikepnrts in both figures.
A represents the tie-chain, audB the lock-"plate, which is simply a. thin metal plate, of any desired contour, to one side of which one end of the chain is permanentlyA attached by a ring, as shown at C. The plate has a. central hole, D, punched through it, ofsuicient size for the chain to pass freely through the same. A notch,
, E, opening from th'e hole D, i's cut in the side of the plate, opposite the connection C, which notch is of-such width as to only allow the 'links of the chain to enter the same edgewise, so that when a link is entered therein, the contiguous links, being, from the construction ofthe chain, 'at right angles Vto theV entered link, will bear upon the sides ofthe slot, and thereby securely fasten to the two ends of'the chain.
l When the chain is looped around the neck of a bag or other article, it' may be draw'n up by holding the lock-plate with one hand, and drnwing upontllc frceicnd of thc chain with the other, inl a direction to keep the 'chain in the central hole, until a suiicient tension has been obtained, when, by entering o. link into the slot E,
thc two ends ofthe loop will he secured, and the bag or other article encircled by the loop sccurelyhcld therein.:`
The loop will be nnfastencd with'thc greatest readiness by simply withdrawing the cntorcd link from the notch. As a`precaution against' the accidental escape oi' the entered link from the notch, a. cross-notch, E,lmay be employed, which will partially receive the cross or lockingdink, but of such length as notA to allow-the crosslink to draw through it.
The fastener lmay be permanently connected to thc bag by n few stitches of thread, passing through the ring C Aand the bag, or in any other convenient manner.
The 'chain may he of any length desired, to suit parcels of dilercnt sizes. l
Each link forms a locking-point, so that the encircling loop may be drawn up to any required tension, and secured withoutlossby slip.
The utility, chcapness, and simplicity of the device are manifest.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, und desire to sccureby Letters Patent, s
The combination, with the tic-'chain A, ofthe lock-plate B, having a hele, D, and notch, E, with cross-notch E', all constructed substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
' LEVI I-I. COLBO'RN. Witnesses: v v
