Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 14, 1914. Serial No. 824,761.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHAN Vanna, a subject of the King of Hungary. residing at Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nutcrackers, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to nut crackers, and ha for its object to provide a device of such class, with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for detachably securing in position the stationary crushing elements of the device.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a nut cracker which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efiicient and convenient in its use, readily set up and inexpensive.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction. combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a nut cracker in ac cordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view, Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, illustrating the reducer for the stationary crushing element, and Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a detachable cutter, which can be employed in lieu of the stationary crushing jaw and reducer.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 6 denotes a base provided in its upper face with a pocket 7 and the bottom thereof is formed with a recess 8 for a purpose to be presently referred to.
Extending into the top of the base 6 at the rear thereof, is an upright 9, the latter being fixedly secured to the base 6 by vertically disposed holdfast devices 10. Secured to th upper end of the upright 9 and projecting forwardly therefrom at right angles is an arm 11 formed with a vertically disposed opening 12.
Extending through the opening 12 and projecting above and below the arm 11 is a casing 13 having formed integral therewith lateral flanges 14 and 15, which are fixedly secured to the arm 11 by vertically disposed bolts 16 carrying nuts 17. The casing 13 has a thickened bottom 18 formed with a centrally disposed opening 19 and the said casing 13 is closed at its top through the medium of an apertured cap 20, the latter detachably engaging with the inner face of the casing 13.
Extending through the cap 20 and opening 19 is a plunger rod 20 having secured to its upper end a head or handle 21 and having attached to its lower end a crushing head 22, and surrounding said rod 20 and arranged within the casing 13 is a coiled spring 23, the latter engages with the rod 20 The function of the spring 23 is to normally maintain the rod 20 elevated. The crushing head 22 in connection with the rod 20 and spring 23 provides a movable crushing element.
Secured to the lower face of the base 6, as well as being seated therein, is a plate 24, having integral therewith a vertically disposed stem 25, the latter projects through an opening 26 formed in the base 6 and extends above the upper face of the said base 6. The upper end of the stem 25 is peripherally threaded as at 27.
Mounted in the recess 8 is a stationary aw base 28, through which projects the stem 25 and the said jaw base 28 is secured to the base 6, by holdfast devices 29. These latter further constitute means for securing the plate 2-1 to the base 6 and for further coupling the jaw base 28 to the plate 24:.
Detachably mounted upon the threaded end 27 of the stem 25 is the interiorly threaded shank 30 of a cup-shaped stationary crushing member 31. The stem 25 does not project interiorly through the shank 30, whereby when occasion so requires the threaded stem 81 of a pocketed reducer 32 can be secured to the member 30.
In Figs. 4 and 5, a stationary crushing element is illustrated in the form of a knife and the said element consists of a block 33 having a threaded pocket 34: whereby said block can be detachably secured to the threaded end 27 of the stem 25. Fixedly secured to the block 33 is a knife or cutter 35.
The member 31 is formed with ribs 36 to assist in the crushing of the nut and when the nut cracker is employed for crushing unusually small nuts, the reducer 32 is connected to the member 31 and said reducer has a pocket 37 for the reception of the nut.
If it be desired to open the nut by cutting the same, the stationary crushing element illustrated in Figs. t and 5 is employed and when employed the member 81 is removed and the block 33 secured to the stem 24: as illustrated in Fig. 5.
What I claim is 1. A nut cracker comprising a base, a spring controlled movable crushing element arranged thereover, a knife detachably mounted in said movable crushing element, a stationary crushing element associated with said movable element and including a plate secured to said base and having a stem projecting therethrough, a base member connected with said plate and seated in said base, said stem projecting through said base member, a crushing device detachably connected to the stem and mounted upon said base member, and a reducing element connected to said device.
2. A nut cracker comprising a plate, a vertically disposed stem projecting therefrom, a base connected With said plate and having said stem projecting therethrough, a cup-shaped member detachably connected to the stem and engaging said base, a reducing element detachably connected to said cupshaped member, and a movable crushing jaw arranged over the said members.
