Description

JOHN E. EARLE, OF NEW HAVEN, OONNEQTIOUT.
IMPRovED FURNITURE-PAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,371, dated November 6, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. EARLE, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and lState of Connecticut, have invented a new and ImprovedFurniture-Pad; and I dohereby declare the following, when taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specication, and represent, in-
Figure 1,'a side View; Fig. 2, a top View; 3, a longitudinal central section; and in Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7, different constructions of the same invention.
My invention relates to an improvement in pads or cushions' used upon furniture for the purpose of protecting the walls of rooms from injury from the furniture; and my invention consists in forming the pads of/indiarubber, or similar elastic substance, and combining therewith metallic ears, by which the said pads may be secured to the furniture, which said ears serve to strengthen and prevent the pads from easily becoming detached from the furniture; the object of my invention beingto produce a furniture-pad which may be adjusted to different parts of furniture, adapting itself to different curves or angles.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and apply my improved pads, I will proceed to fully describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
As represented in Figs. l, 2, and 3, A is a piece of ordinary rubber tubing. B Bl are spindles inserted into each end of the said 4 tubing, (see Fi g.3,) the outer ends forming ears ferent construction is shown in Figs, 4, 5, and 6, in which the pad A is tirst formed in a mold with ears C upon either end. Upon the top of In Fig. 7 another form of construction is shown, in which metallic spindles B, with ears (J, similar to those in Fig. 3, are inserted.
By this construction the pad may be easily curved or twisted lo coliform to the shape of that part of the furniture to which it is to be attached, and as the screw or other means by which the pad is secured to the furniture bears entirely upon a metallic surface, the elasticity ofthe rubber will not allow its being drawn oi' over the screw, as could easily be done did the screw bear directly upon the rubber without the intervention ot' metal and the metallic ears, being independent ot' each other, allow any adjustment to conform to the shape ot' the furniture, which could not be attained were the two ears formed from a single piece of metal. y
Having, therefore, thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination of the metallic ears O O and the pad A, when the said two ears are made independent cach of the other, so as to be made adjustable, substantially as described.
JOHN E. EARLE.
