Description

-Mop-Heads. .NO- 142,328. B Patef'teffsepfembewnas.

UNITED STATES JAMES DAVIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOP-HEADS.
. Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,328, dated September 2, 1873; application filed May 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES DAVIS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop -Heads, of which improvements the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part ot' this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mop-head provided with niy improvements Fig. 2, a top or plan view of the nut-holder; Fig. 3, a modification in the form of the same; and Fig. 4, a bottom view of the nut.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
In the drawing, A represents the fixed jaw of the mop-head, and A the adjust-able jaw. The fixedjaw is rigidly attached to the mophandle B. C is a tubular screw, provided vwith a screw-thread on its outer surface, and rigidly attached to the mop-handle at a point below the jaw A. D is a single piece of malleable metal, first made in the oblong form shown in Fig. 2. The piece D is rigidly attached to the ends of the jaw A. E is a nut arranged on the part C, and having its inner faceprovided with a screw thread Vcorresponding to the thread upon the part C. e e are ears projecting laterally from the upper face of the nut E, by means of which ears the nut may be readily turned on the part C, and be thus made to move up and down the threaded face of the latter. e e are also ears projecting laterally from opposite sides of the lower face of the nut E. The distance of the outer edges of the ears e e from each other is nearly equal to the longest diameter of the opening in the piece D, so that the nut E may be readily arranged in the piece D when the latter is in the form shown in Fig. 2, and so that the said ears c e will lap the lower face of the said piece when the nut is turned partly around. When the nut E is arranged inthe piece D I compress the latter until it assumes a circular the piece slotted, as shown in Fig. 3, and the ears e e may be extended entirely around the nut E, so as to form a flange. The nut E may then be arranged in the piece D and retained therein by pressing the sides of the slots tgether until the rim of the opening is lapped by the ears c e.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the adjustable jaw may be readily adjusted and retained in position when adjusted by turning the nut E in either direction,
I am aware that the piece D lhas heretofore been made in two parts arranged and attached together so as to clasp a nut provided with ears 5 but I do not claim such, and the object ot my invention is to avoid constructing the part D in two pieces; and to that end I make it of lmalleable metal, and in a form substantially thesame as shown and described, so that it may also serve as a clasp for the nut.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is?- The part D, made in one piece, of malleable metal, and in a form substantially the same as shown and described, and rigidly attached to the adjustable jaw of a mop-head, in combina tion with the nut E, made in one piece, and arranged on the rigid screw C and within the part D, and provided with the ears e and e', lapping the upper and lower face, respectively, of the part D, and with a screw-thread engaging the screw C, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
JAMES DAVIS.
