COLLAR BUTTON.
No. 590,606. Patented Sept. 21,1897.
WITNESSES 0 [IV Vii/V1072 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER \VATSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COLLAR-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,506, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed August 19, 1896. Serial No. 603,186.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to collar-buttons.
My object is to provide an extremely simple and cheap collar-button which will be of such peculiar construction that it can be locked in position after once being inserted in the collar-band and will be easy and comfortable when in use. v
Having the foregoing object in View, the invention consists of a collar-button comprising certain improved features and novel combinations of parts, appearing more fully hereinafter and recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of my button; Fig. 2, a side elevation showing the supplemental head loose on the shank, and Fig. 3 a similar view showing the supplemental head locked.
The numeral 1 designates the enlarged shoe of my improved button. From this shoe arises a shank 2, and on the other end of this shank is located a small head 3. The shank is enlarged somewhat immediately next the shoe, as shown at 5, and provided with a pcripheral groove 6.
The numeral 7 designates the supplemental head, which, in the present instance, is loose on the main portion of the shank, but is provided with a collar 8, provided with two diametrically-disposed notches 9 and 10. Said collar is of such size that it is adapted to slip (No model.)
over the enlargement of the shank and its edge to look into the peripheral groove, the notches allowing a slight expansion and contraction of said collar. After the supplemental head and the main head have been passed through the garment the former is pressed down against the shoe, whereupon it immediately locks in position, but can be removed whenever desirable.
Slight and immaterial changes of construction might be resorted to Without detracting from the advantages of my invention, and it is to be understood that I do not therefore limit myself to the precise construction herein shown and described, but consider that I am entitled to all such variations as come within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a collar-button, the-combination with a shoe, a shank, and a head, of an enlargement formed on the shank, and a supplemental head slidable on the shank provided with a collar adapted to receive the enlargement and lock therewith.
2. In a collar-button, the combination with a shoe, a shank, and a head, of an enlargement formed on the shank adjacent the shoe, and a supplemental head slidable on the shank and which is provided with a notched or split collar or socket adapted to receive the enlargement and lock therewith.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDER WATSON.
