SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,912, dated September 14, 1897. Application filed May 5, 1897. Serial No. 635,124- (No model.)

' To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EMANUEL STERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dickeys, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in a reversible dickey having four available fronts, which may be used in succession. The general outline of the dickey is rectangular. It is cut away at each end to form neck-openings and cutaway at each side to facilitate folding and to impart to each of the fronts a shield shape which adapts it to the shape of the body and prevents bulging and buckling in use. A suitable fasteningsuch as a button, buttonhole, or loop--is provided at each end near the neck-opening for attaching the dickey to a shirt.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the dickey to a shirt. Figs. 2 and 3 are views showing opposite sides of the dickey. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are perspective views showing the dickey folded at the central line and the manner of presenting the several bosoms to the front.

Referring to the drawings, Figs. 2 and 3 show opposite sides of a dickey. The general outline is rectangular. It is cut away at each end to form neck-openings and also cut away at D at the middle of each side to facilitate folding along thetransverse central line C and also to impart a shield shape to the sections A B on each side of theline O.

The dickey consists of two or more plies of fabric united by suitable stitching and finished on the outer faces of the outer plies.

The several fronts or bosoms may have different patterns or configurations, or they may be all alike. In Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown different patterns upon the bosoms for convenien cc of illustration, the

1 and 2 of Fig. .2 being the reverse sides of bosoms 3 and '4: of Fig. 3, respectively.

Any convenient means for attaching the dickey to the collar-button of the shirt may be employed, such as the elastic loop E, adapted to pass over the collar-button and having a button F, which passes through a buttonhole in the top of the dickey. Any other suitable means of attachment may be employed.

The dickey is to be worn usually as shown in full lines, Fig. 1-thatis, folded upon itself on the central line Obut it may be worn as shown in dotted lines, the lower part depending from the upper one.

The manner of reversing and inverting the dickey, so as to present the several bosoms to the front in succession, is illustrated in Figs. 4 to 7, inclusive. Fig. 4 shows the dickey creased on the central line 0, bosom 1 of part A being to the front and part B in the rear. Fig. 5 shows part B brought forward and laid over part A, so that bosom No. 4 is presented. After bosoms Nos. 1 and 4 are soiled the dickey may be inverted, as shown in Fig. 6, so that bosom No. 2 of part B will be shown, while part A is placed in the rear, and afterward, as shown in Fig. 7, part A may be folded in front of part B, so that bosom No. 3 will be presented to the front.

The advantages of my invention will. be readily apparent, as it provides means for presenting four clean front-s successively, which may have as many different patterns or configurations, while no more space is occupied than is required by anordinary dickey, and there is little tendency to wrinkle.

The dickey may be worn on gardless of the size of neckband.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- A reversible dickey having four fronts or bosoms, comprising two or more substantially rectangular plies of fabric united by suitable stitching and finished on the outer faces of the outer plies, said plies being cutaway centrally at each end to form neck-openings, and also cut away centrally at each side to divide the dickey into two substantially shieldshaped portions, each portion being provided with a suitable fastening adjacent to the neckopening, substantially as described.
