Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. V. DECKVITE, OF HAMDEN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND T. B. CARPENTER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
VIMPROVED ADJUSTABLE SHELF FOR STOVE-PIPES, 86C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,712, dated October 9, 1866.
To all 'whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, S. V. BEoKwrrn, of Hamden,.in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented anew Improved Adjustable Shelf; 'and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specicatiou, and represent, in-
Figure l, a side view; Fig. 2, a top view, and in Fig. 3 a vertical central section.
My invention is designed more especially to be applied to stove-pipes, so that the shelf may rest at a little distance above the stove, for the purpose of heating articles or retaining heat in articles once heated, or for other similar domestic purposes, and consists in the arrangement of a band to surround the pipe, holding in position a socket, which supports a shelf constructed with a shank to set into the said socket, so that the shelf may be turned thereon to the right or left, and the saidband constructed so that it may be raised up or down upon the pipe, as occasion' may require.
To enable others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is a pipe, representing an ordinary stovepipe, around which is placed a metal band, B, its two ends secured together by a key, a, or any conveniently adjustable device. C is a socket, formed so that the band B passes over its base, as seen in Fig. 3, whereby the said socket is securely held in position; D, the shelf, also formed of metal, perforated or not,
as may be desired, provided with an arm, E, which is formed with a shank, F, to set into the socket C, as seen in Figs. l and 3, so that the shelf may be turned to the right or left, as
denoted in blue, Fig. 2; or, by moving thel socket C, the shelf may be adjusted to a different position, as denoted in red, Fig. 2.
lf desirable that the shelf should be fixed at any given position, I form a notch, d, (see Fig. 2,) in the socket C corresponding to such desired position, and fix a pin or other projection,f, on the arm of the shelf, so that by raising the shelf and turning it to such desired position the piu f will fall into the notch d and retain the shelf in that position.
If desired to raise or lower the shelf, release the band B bya partial withdrawal of the key, or in the manner provided by the mode of securing the two ends together; then raise or lower the shelf to the desired position, and in that position secure the band.
My invention, though especially designed for application to stove-pipes and for domestic uses,is equally applicable to many other places and other uses. f
Having, therefore, thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the adjusting-band B, the socket C, and the shelf D, provided with a shank, F, constructed and arranged so as to be adjustable, substantially in the manner set forth.
