The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent-and making part of the same.

Be it known that I, CHARLES I). NEWTON, of

Troy, in the county of Reusselaer, and "in .the State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Ranges; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descn'ption' thereof, reference being had to'the accompauying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 .is a front elevation. of a cooking-ral-ige containing my improvements;

The natureof my invention consists in the employment of a fender upon the front of a cooking-' range, so constructed as to permit of its being secured to or removed from said range, as may be desired; a

A represents the front plate or casing, enclosing the fuel-chamber, immediately above and in rear of which are two baking-ovens, B and B, supported by the side and back plates 0, O, and D, and having around the outside of each the usual flues, which are counectedwith said fuel-chamber by means of a flue or pipe, E. I

Immediately above .the upper flue of the ovens is a warming-closet, F,- through which passes the exit-pipe G, by which means said closet receives warmth from both flue and pipe.

The frorit of the closet F is enclosed by four slid-' ing doors, H and H, whiclnopeu outward from the centre, and are connected together or operated in pairs, the centre doors,'H, being placed in a groove outside of the others, H, which latter are provided a with a flange upon their inner ends, projecting outward at a right angle, and engaging with similar flanges projecting inward from either end of the outer doors H, so that, when the latter are moved, laterally, in either direction, one of the flanges thereon shall engage with that upon the inner door, and cause said door to slide in the same direction. V The grooves containing the doors extend across the entire front, and permit said dobrs to he slid outward until only their inner ends are contained therein, Where they are held, by means of a pin or its equivalent, upon the inner endof-the inner doors, which projects tothe rear, so as to engage with the side plates of the closet. Y

By this arrangement, it will be seen that the entire front of the warming-closet can be thrown open, so as to permit of the introduction thereto, or removal therefrom, of any articles which said closet is capable of containing,and, further, that it permits of the removal of articles from the sides of said closet without disturbing those placed near the centre, or where the doors are usually situated.

Although this arrangement is deemed most advantageous, if desired, the doors may he hinged together, and to the side plates of the closet, so as to allow-the entire front thereof to be opened.

In order that the oven and warming-closet may be used, it is necessary that the operator should, occasionally stand very close to the lower part of the stove,

and it often happens, that while thus engaged, the

clothes take fire, causing more or less damage, and, sometimes, loss of life.

To guard against all liability to such accidents, I employ a fender, I, consisting of a metal rod, of the form shown in fig. 4, which is secured, at its ends, to the front plate A',.and projects outward, and across the front of the same, so as to withhold the clothes from contact with the heated range.

As, however, saidfender would be in the way when the roasting-oven is used, it is necessarythat it should be removable when desired, which object is accomplished by providing, upon each end thereof, ahook, 1', extending rearward and upward, as seen in figs; 3 and 5, so that, when passed through a suitable opening in the plate A, it will bear against the inside of said plate above the opening, while the shoulder or end of said fender will bear against the outside of the plate below said opening, and thus hold the fender in a horizontal position, the distance from the outside of said hook to the shoulder -or end of said fender being:

just equal to the thickness of the plate.

When'thus constructed, the fender can bereadily applied to or removed from the stove, as occasion may require, and, as it costs but little, its general use is considered certain. 7
