IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-DREES. i
@the .dntule tetemh tu in tlgzse titters rztin :un mating gaat nt tte sume,
TO ALL WHM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN SPEAR, of Carbondale, in the eounty.of Jackson, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Out-Door Oven and Fruit-Drier and I do hereby declare that theifollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to" the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. v
Figure 1 of the drawings is .a representation ot' an external view of my device.
Figure 2 is a vertical section.
Figure 3 is a cross-section o f the sectionB, showing the perforated shelf and damper.
Figures 4 and 5 are details.
The object of myinvention is to provide,A for household-use, a more systematic and perfect arrangement for' drying fruit by artificial heat than has hitherto been used or known.
' My oven is constructed in the form shown on the drawings. It consists of two sections, marked A and B, respectively, with a hollow rotating shaft, C, extending through both. Letter 0 is the furnace.
The hollow shaft'C serves as a pipe to conduct the heat and smoke upward from the fire, and also to give a rotary motion to the shelves'in section A, as hereinafter mentioned. This shaft is pivoted on the top ofthe furnace, as shown at D, in order to allow of the rotary movement referred to.
About three inches, more or less, above the furnace, I attach to shaft C the drum marked G on the drawings, and to the outer side of this drum, and encircling the same, I aix the circular perforated shelves marked H.
On the insideof drum G, and attached to shaft C, is a series of spiral anches, which extend from near the bottom to near the top of the drum. These anchcs are marked K on the drawings, and their o flice is to secure a rotary motion to the shaft C, a'nd the drum'and shelves connected therewith, by means of the draught from the furnace. l I
Letter S is the door of section It is constructed in two, parts, hinged together in the manner shown. When-I desire to examinethe condition of the drying fruit, I open one part only, but when I place the fruit on the shelves, or remove it therefrom, I open the entire door. This door is also a convenient aid in regulating the heat in the oven.
The section B is usually constructed in a quadrangular'form, and is connected with section A, as shown.
The letters L are dempers, the oiIice-of which is'to regulate the heat from section A.
Letters M are doors to section B, attached by hinges, and opening upward, as shown at a.
Letters e are dempers in the top of section B, to aid in regulating the heat in said section.
Letters d are perforated shelves in section B. i
The pans for holding the fruit, when drying, are constructed a triangular form when used in section A, but in section B they should have the ordinary-square form.
Letter Y is a hook and pin, by means of which the doors of section B are held suspended and open.
The arrangement above described is believed to combine a more`perfect and effective apparatus for the purposes sought than any similar device yet known, but its uses are not intended to be confined to the drying of fruit only. I find, upon experiment, that it is also safe and economical for baking-purposes, and more especially for the baking of thin cakes, crackers, and the like.
What I claim as myvinvention, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A'fruit-drier, having sections A and D, 'shaft C, drum G, hanches K, shelves H and d, dempers c and L, doors S and M, and hook and pin Y, constructed and arranged substantially as herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN SPEAR.
