i- IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-FIXTURE.
The Schddule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that we, NATHANIEL L. BRADLEY and JOHN A. EvARTs, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Cast-Metal Gas-Fixtures; and we do hereby declare the following, when 'when in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters Of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact desciiption of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and rep- Figure 1, a side View,
Figure 2, a vertical central section,
Figure 3, a transverse section on line x x, and in Figure 4, an end view, toillustrate the construction of that part of the ixture, and the manner of attaching the same. 4
This invention is designed for the construction of gas-fixtures 'om cast-metal, the object being to overcome the necessity of casting the metal around the pipe, or casting it in parts, as has been done, leaving an open and irregular joint where the two parts come together; and the invention consists in casting the one part with a lip or flange, so as tp project over the otheiI part; the said lip, while it covers the joint, serving as a part of the ornamentation ofthe fixture; also in forming the coupling between the xture and the pipe with a square or angular flange, so as to lit in a corresponding square or angular recess in the fixture, so that the xture may be screwed on to its proper position without the aid of a wrench.
In order to the clear understanding of our invention, we will proceed to describe the saine as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
AA is the one part, B the other part of an ordinary bracket, dividing at the centre, and so as to enclose the pipe O, as seen in figs. 2 and 35,". The part A is. cast with a lip, a, upon each side, and so as toforni ashonlder, d, beneath which lip, and against ill-1e shoulder, the part B sets, as seen in iig. 3, and when so set together in iig. 1, inserted in such manner as to add rather than detract from the generalconfiguration of design.
Thus it uu'll be seen that, although the joint at the shoulder d may be very irregular, yet thelip a covers the joint, and forms a rib at the centre of thefixture, which, while it so covers the joint, forms an important part in the design of the fixture, and by this construc tion the pipe may-be fitted, and the parts placed over the pipe and secured, without in any manner interfering with the joints in the pip'e.
TIn order to facilitate the attachment of the fixture, so that the iixture itself will form the wrench by means of which it is screwed into place, weform a square or angular recess, P, within the two parts, and on the coupling R we form a corresponding square Or angular flange, f, (see iigs. 2 and 4,) so that when the said coupling is screwed on to the pipe C, the flange will set into and fit the recess P. Therefore, when the two parts are secured together, the recess P forms the wrench by which the pipe may be screwed to place, without the aid of the ordinary pipe-wrench.
We do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming the casting of two parts in metal, so that when the two are placed together the joint will be covered, confining our invention entirely to the manufacture of gasxtures.
Having fully described our invention,
What we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, gas-ixtures, the shell or ornamental part of which .is formed of two parts of cast-metal, one part being provided with a lip or' lips, a, to cover the joint and form a rib, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
` NATHAN IEL 'L. BRADLEY.
JOHN A. EVARTS.
