UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. EDSALL, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO H. L. JUDD & 00., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CORNlCE-POLE ANGLE-PIECE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,846, dated May 24, 188i.
Application filed February 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. EDsALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Angle -Pieces for Cornice Poles, Railings, 850., of which the following is a specification.
Cornice-poles are often made in three parts, so as to project in front of the window. Sometimes these parts are hinged together, or else dowels are used, but the crack or joint at the angle between the lengths is more or less visible andobjectionable.
My invention is made for uniting the different lengths of cornice-poles, railings, or similar articles with a movable angle-piece that is not confined to any particular angle, but may be set to the place where the article is to be used, and the angle-piece becomes ornamental, and there is no crack or opening visible between the ends of the poles.
In the drawings, Figure l is a horizontal section of the cornice-poles and angle-piece, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.
I make use of two parts, a and b, of sheet metal or similar material. The portion a is a globe, or nearly so, and the portion b is a globular cup, more nearly approaching a hemisphere in shape than the globe at, which is inserted in the cup I), and the edges of cup I) closed, so as to retain the ball. The attaching screws or dowels c and d are connected to the globe and cup respectively. I prefer and use screws, as shown and the screw d, that is united to the cup I), is not at right angles to the rim of the cup, but is at an angle to the same of about sixty degrees, so that when the parts of the cornice are in place the rim of the cup will bisect, or nearly so, the angle of the cornice-poles.
The cap-pieces f and g are adapted to cover the ends of the cornice-poles h 70 or railing or similar article to be joined. hey should be separate from the parts a and b, so as to be changeable to the particular size of the poles to be united, and they should be formed with a rim to embrace the section and a concave segment, so as to set closely up to the ball and cup respectively.
By the use of the screws 0 and d the respective parts can be disconnected for packing.
When in use these an gle-pieces form a handsome ornament, as well as a very secure connection for the parts of the cornice.
I am aware that universal joints have been made for shafting of a ball and socket.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The angle-piece for cornice-poles or similar articles, consisting of the ball (0 and segmental cup b, and their attaching devices, the screw or dowel of the cup I) being at an inclination to its rim, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the ball a and cup 11, of the attaching-screws c and d and the cappieces f and g, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 23d day of February, A. D. 1881.
WILLIAM H. EDSALL.
