Description

J. GALLINGER. Socket and Stand'for Lamps,
Patented June 25, 1878 UNITED STATES JOSEPH GALLINGER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOCKETS AND STANDS FOR LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,376, dated June 25, 1878; application filed June 5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH GALLINGER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Socket and Stand for Lamps, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical central sec tion. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section in the plane 00 :r, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to that class of lamps which are provided with a fastening device for a shank on the lamp-fount, and around which is arranged a metallic casing for concealing the fastening device.
My invention consists in a peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, whereby both the metallic shell and the fastening-thimble are confined in a depression in the upper end of the stand by means of a screw-bolt passing through the lower ends of both said shell and fastening-thimble.
In the drawing, the letter A designates my stand, the foot to and standard I) of which are made in one piece, of glass or other vitreous material, the whole being produced in a suitable mold, so that it can be made very cheap, and at the same time in any desired plain or ornamental form. The stand A is made hollow, and in the inner surface of its foot are formed recesses c c, for the reception of a metallic cross-bar, d, through which extends a screw-rod, e, that forms the connection between the stand and the socket B. In the top of the standard I) of the stand is formed a depression, f, to engage with a projection, 9, formed at the bottom of the socket, so that when the nut of the screw-rod e is screwed up the socket is firmly and securely retained on the top of the stand.
The socket B is composed of an external shell, g, and an internal fastening device, h.
The shell g is bell-shaped, or made in such a form that it fits the convex surface of the bottom part of the lamp-fountain G, and the fastening device, which I have represented in the drawing, consists of a sheet-metal screw, adapted to engage with a screw-thread formed on the shank of the fountain. I do not wish to confine myself, however, to this precise form of the fastening device, since various fastening devices can be used without deviatin g from my invention.
The shank of the lamp-fountain may, for instance, be provided with lugs projecting from its sides, and adapted to engage with lL-shaped slots formed in the fastening device it.
By these means I am enabled to connect the lamp-fountain and the socket in a quick and expeditious manner without the use of plaster-of-paris or other cement; and, since the fastening device It is concealed by the shell g, the good appearance of the lamp is preserved.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the stand A, having the depression f, and with the fount C, of the shell g, having a projection, g, adapted to the depression, the internal fastening-thimble h, for receiving and holding the shank of the fount, and the screw-bolt e. passing through the lower end 8 of the shell, the fastening thimble for confining the said shell and fastening device in the depression f of the shell, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 31st day of May, 1878.
JOSEPH GALLINGER.
