Description
M. SAVIER. Shield for Camp Fires..
Patented May 24, 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
M. SAVIERS, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42.879. dated May 24', 1864.
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that l, M. SAVIERS, of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State ofv Missouri, have invented a new and useful Guard or Shield for Camp-Fires; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is aperspective view of my inven; tion in use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same adjusted so as to protect the fire from rain. Fig. 3 is a view of the sheet-metal plate of the same, shown in a straightened state, as when not. in use.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the several. figures.
This invention relates to a guard or shield for protecing camp fires from wind or rain, and also afford an effieient means for suspending kettles, meats, 820., over the fire, and to ptevent smoke and fire being driven into the tent or camp even when the device is placed in close proximity to the same.
The invention consists in the employment or use ofa sheet-metal plate of any convenient dimensions and of such a thickness as to admit of being bent or curved in the arc of a circle, the above plate being used in connection with a rod so constructed and arranged as to hold the plate in curved form and ad mit of kettles, meats, &c., being suspended from it over the fire, as hereinafter set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a sheet-metal plate, which may be of any convenient dimensions, but for ordinary purposes it may be about seven (7) feet long by two feet three inches (2 feet 3 inches) in width. This plate A has one or more notches, a, made in onev edge of it near its ends to receive the ends of a metal rod, B, which may be about three-fourths of an inch in thickness and four feet six inches (4 feet 6 inches) in length, said rod having a head or collar, 1), at each end of it to retain the plate A in curved form, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. On this rod B there are placed one or more hooks, 0, on which kettles O, meats, &c., may be suspended, the fire D being built underneath them. The plate A may betnrned horizontally and adjusted in any position to shield the fire from the wind. The weight of kettles or other articles 011 the rod B will effectually prevent the plate A being blown over by the wind.
In case of rain the fire may be protected from the same by turning the plate A 011 its ends, as representedin Fig. 2. Hooks may be fitted on the upper edge of the plate to allow meats, &c., being suspended in the hollow or concave of the plate for roasting.
The device may be readily transported from place to place by disengaging the rod B from the notches a in the plate A and straightening the latter so that it may be laid in the bottom of a wagon and not monopolize any considerable space.
Having thus described may invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patents, is-
A guard or shield for camp-fires, composed ofa sheet metal plate, A, in connection with a rod B, arranged substantially as herein set fourth.
M. SAVIERS.
