NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SALLIE O. NOBLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PROTECTING-POCKET FOR RANGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,337, dated March 31, 1896.
Application filed November 21,1895. Serial No- 569,'7SS. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALLIE (J. NOBLE, a citizen of the United States, and'a resident of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Protecting-Pockets for Ranges, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention has relation to kitchenranges; and it consists in an adjustable elongated wire pocket composed of wire-netting having, preferably, reinforced outer edges adapted to inclose the elongated draft-opening usually provided in ranges above the front grate and to fit upon the plate or door of said opening when down to prevent the coals of the fire from falling or being thrown out of said opening, as when the range is unattended at night, said pocket having provided upon each of the two ends an elongated arm or catch secured at one end to the pocket and hooked at the opposite end. to engage upon the walls of the range at the opposite ends of the opening.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my invention, in the preferred form of construction, adjusted and in position upon a range inclosing the draft-opening referred to. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the preferred form of my invention detached.
A represents the wire-netting with closelywoven meshes provided upon the face of the pocket, preferably convex in form, having the ends B, the outer edges of the pocket bein g reinforced by the reinforcing-wires a, forming, preferably, rectilinear faces adapted to fit upon or about the elongated draft-opening of the range and upon the door or plate when open, respectively. The inner face or mouth of the pocket is, preferably, of a length and depth approximately equal to that of the draft-opening, while the lower face of the pocket in length and depth is, preferably, slightly less than that of the door or plate of the opening, so as to readily rest upon the same when down. The elongated arms 0,
having their outer ends 0 hooked, are secured at their inner ends to the opposite ends of the pocket, preferably near the front portion of of the draft-opening.
the pocket, so as to allow of a movement of the arms while securing the pocket in position.
In adjusting the pocket in position upon the range in the preferred construction shown the arms 0 at their outer ends are depressed or dropped below the level of the bottom of the pocket, which is then held in a position to allow the hooked ends of the arms 0 to be inserted in the draft-opening, so as to engage the hooks on the inner face of the outer plate of the range at the opposite ends of the opening or against other projecting portions. The
pocket is then turned down between the two arms to the position shown in the drawings, resting upon the plate E and against the walls It is clear that in this manner the pocket is held firmly in position, the arms being prevented from becoming disengaged by contact with the end portions of the pocket. Adjusted in this manner it is impossible for any of the coals to fall or be forced out through this elongated draft-opening, which is usually otherwise unprotected and causes danger from fire when unattended, as at night.
It is clear that when the pocket is constructed of heavy wire the reinforcing edges a may be omitted and it may be so arranged that the lower front edge of the pocket may engage beneath the front edge of the plate E when in position. Other constructions of hooks might also be employed for securing the pocket rigidly in position in front of the draft-opening.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a spark-protector for ranges consisting of the wire-netting face A and ends, B, elongated arms, 0, secured at one end to the opposite ends of the protector respectively, and hooked projections, 0, provided upon the outer ends of said arms, 0, for engagement with the walls of the range, substantially as described.
2. In a wire-netting spark-protector for ranges elongated securing-arms, 0, provided upon opposite ends of the protector loosely attached at one end upon the forward part of the ends of the protector and outwardly-protrading hooks, 0, adapted to be engaged in the walls of the range-opening when the protector is swung forward out of position and when hooked to allow of the passage of the protector down between the two arms holding the same in position against displacement, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of November, A. D. 1895.
