FRANCIS E. MATTHEIVS, OF GLOUSTER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE E. FAIRES, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED SCRUBBlNG-BRUSH AND MOP HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,857, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed March 27, 1897.
To ctZZ whom it may omwcrn:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. MA'rrHEws, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glouster, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Scrubbing- Brush and Mop Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a combined scrubhing-brush and mop holder, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same by which the holder can be connected with a scrubbing brush or rubber and be readily disconnected therefrom and be engaged with a mop, sponge, or other similar article.
The invention consists, essentially,- in a holder consisting of a spring-metal rod bent over at its center to form a loop and forming 2 5 two spring-arms the ends of which are curved backwardly and then bent outwardly at right angles and pointed and adapted to engage with eyes secured to a scrubbing-brush or to penetrate a mop, in combination with a slide encircling said arms and a handle passing through said loop and secured to the slide, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved 3 5 holder connected with a scrubbingbrush.
Fig. 2 is a plan View, the brush being removed and the holder connected with a mop. Fig. 3 is a side view.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral to 1 designates the holder, consisting of a springmetal bar bent at its center to form a loop or coil 2 and two arms The ends of these arms are curved backwardly, forming short arms at, the extremities of which are bent out- 5 wardly at approximately right angles to the arms 1 and sharpened, formingpointed lugs 5.
Serial No.'629,558. (No model.)
The numeral 6 designates a slide, consisting of an oblong ring which encircles the arms 3 and is secured to a handle 7, which passes through the loop 2.
The numeral 8 designates a scrubbingbrush provided with screw-eyes 9, with which the lugs 5 are adapted to engage.
The numeral 10 designates a mop with which the pointed lugs engage when the device is employed as a mop-holder.
In practice when the device is to be used as a brush-holder the slide 6 is pushed toward the ends of the holder by means of the handle, contracting the arms 3, so that the lugs 6 can pass between the screw -eyes of the brush. The slide is then moved in a reverse direction, when the arms through their resiliency will spring outwardly and the lugs will pass through the eyes, thus connecting the brush with the holder.
When used as a mop-holder, the arms are contracted, as before described, withdrawing the lugs from the eyes, so as to disengage the brush from the holder. A mop or cloth is then applied to the ends of the holder and the arms allowed to expand, when the pointed lugs will pierce the same and thereby securely hold it in place.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- I The combination with the handle, of the holder consisting of a spring-metal rod bent at the center into a coil or loop, through which said handle passes, forming two expanded spring-arms, the ends of which are bent outwardlyat approximately right angles to said arms and the extremities pointed, and the slide embracing said arms and movable thereon, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
