BROOM-BRIDLE FOR ATTACHING CLOTHS FOR BRUSHING PURPOSES.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville,in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Bridles for Attaching Cloths or Towels for Brushing Purposes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an'attachment for brooms, and particularly to a device for attaching a cloth or towel to a broom to form a brush, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and durable device applied to a broom-head to hold a cloth or towel in position for brushing house-walls, ceilings, &c.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device, one portion of which will be rigid with the broom-head and another portion be of such elastic connection with the broom-head as to allow cloths or towels of various sizes and thickness to be attached to the broom-head for brushing purposes.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device for attaching a cloth or towel to broom-heads for brushing purposes which can be placed and displaced without separating any part or parts of the device.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, and essentially in forming a rigid connection be tween the broom-head and the cloth-attaching device and an elastic connection between the attaching device and the cloth or towel.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a broom-head with a cloth attached by my improved device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device compressed into position for placing it upon the broom-head. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the device in normal position before placing it. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of parts of the device detached. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification, partly broken away.

The same reference-numerals denote the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.

The broom head l is of ordinary construction, having ahandle 2. The frame or bridle Serial No. 554,323. (No model.)

for attaching the cloth 3 consists of the semi circular wire 4, having an eye 5 in each end,

.through which is run a like wire 6 to form a a complete circular opening of sufficient size to accommodate an ordinary size broom-handle. From the eyes 5 the wire 6 is bent on the same horizontal plane with the circular opening into a half-loop 7. From this point the Wire 6 is curved or bowed and bent downwardly to form depending spring-arms 8, conforming to the shape of the broom-head. The ends of the arms 8 are made into an S-shaped spring-hook 16 to carry an elastic band 9, which may be of any desired elastic or flexible material or it may be asheet-metal spring-band; but I prefer to use elastic material.

The frame or bridle shown in Fig. 4 is made of a single piece of wire bentin circular form with a loop 10 on one side and a like loop 11 opposite. The loop 10 is first made, the wire bent in circular form, and the loop 11 made by one end of the wire, such end being twisted around the circular portion of the wire at the loop 11 and returned beneath half the said circular wire to the loop 10, where it is twisted around the loop 10 and left depending to form the arm 12. The other end of the wire isbent around the loop 11 and also left depending to form the arm 13.

In accordance with either of the described constructions of frame or bridle the circular part when in position becomes rigid with the broom, and the depending arms have sufficient spring to hug the broom-head closely, while the elasticity of the band will bind the arms in position, yet being of sufficient elasticity to allow the insertion of the ends of a cloth or towel between the band and broomhead.

It will be observed that the device can be used upon brooms of various sizes by simply making a circular opening of sufficient size to slip over the largest broom-handle, not requiring a separate device for differentbrooms nor any separation of parts to place and replace it, and cloths or towels of varying size and thickness can be drawn under the band and securely held in place and removed without removing the frame or saddle from the broom-head.
