UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL PAGE, OF MOALLISTERVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IM PROV EM ENT IN EVAPORATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,671, dated October 9, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL PAGE, of Me- Allisterville, in the county of J uniala and State of Pennsylx ania, have made a new and useful Improvement in Evaporators; and l-do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation of the same, sutficient to enable one skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, which are made part of this specification, and in WhlOl.l-
Figure] is a plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a section on the line a b, Fig. 1.
My improvement consists in the arrangement of the pans and their connections.
In the drawings, A is the reservoir; B, the receiving or scummin g pan, which discharges its contents as required through the pipe 0 into the strainer D, from which the heated saccharine liquid passes to the boiling-pan E. In this pan, which is situated over'the furnace F, the greater portion of the water is evaporated, as this pan occupies the hottest position.
From the boiling-pan the condensed fluid passes to the pan G, whereit is converted into sirup or molasses, and is eventually discharged at the faucet H.
.I is a horizontal diaphragm or partition in the flue behind the furnace, and J is a damper so arranged as to close the flue-opening between the plate I and the bottom of the pan G when required. By means of this plate and damper the direct heat of the furnace fire may be turned on or off from the finishil'igpan Gr, which is a matter of convenience and importance in finishing off the m olasses,'which is so apt to burn at this stage, especially if a little addition he made to the fire at that time.
K is a damper in the chimney, by which the activity of the fire is regulated.
Having described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the pans A E G, with the connecting-pipe O, strainer B, and the furnace-fines. substantially as described and represented.
SAMUEL PAGE.
