Description

JAMinIs" HARRIS, or JAN ESVILLE, WISCONSIN.
Letters Patent No. 84,277, dated November 24, 1868.
'. IMPROVEMENT IN EVAPORAT ORS.
The scheduiexefened to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, J nuns HARRIS, of J anesville, county'of Rock, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved Evaporator, for sirnp, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which like parts are indicated by like letters in'the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in'a certain arrangement of the several subdivisions or apartments of the pan, in relation to each other, and, in connection therewith, so regulating the draught of the furnace underneath, that these apartments cannot get empty, unless so desired, ortheir contents burn.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawing Figure l is an under-side view of furnace.
Figure 2 is a top view, without the pan.
Figure 3 is a top view of the pan.
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the same, through the line a-b, fig. 3.
Figure 5is a side elevation of my evaporator.
Arepresents the walls of the furnace, and B, the grate-bars. On the top, a, of the walls of the furnace the pan Crests. It has several apartments, b, b, I)",
.and b'. Nearly one half, or the front end of the pan, -is directly over the furnace or fire-bed; the other half, toward the stack or chimney D, rests over two fines c and (I, having dampers c and f, the handles of which have adjustable weights on, by which to regulate the opening or shutting with nicety. A small slide-gate, g, covering a passage, 9, regulates the supply of cold air into flue cl, over which is the finishing-department b. The pan 6 has a longitudinal partition, h,dividing it, as it were, into two parts. These, again, are out by other partitions, t and j. The partition t has a slide-gate, k,in'it, to regulate the supply of juice from apartment I) to those of b and b, there being an opening in the front and lower end of partition h permitting the juice which fiows from b to b to pass also into I) as it flows onward, it b eing subjected to greater heat as it passes directly over the fire-bed. These three apartments, or their bottoms, are on the same level. At l, in apartment I)", there is an opening by which the juice or sirup can be drawn off, if necessary.
In partition j there is a sliding gate, m, to permit the juice to pass into the finishing-department b. The bottom of the opening, which this gate covers, is above the bottom of pan 1); that is, there is a'small ledge which prevents the several pans, b, b, and 7), from getting empty or burning. At a, in pan b',-there is also an opening in its bottom, and a pipe or spigot,
like at l, to draw off the sir-up when done. The finishing-department being lower or deeper than the rest, a greater depth or quantity of ,sirup can be managed.
In the defecating or boiling-apartments the depth of juice should not exceed one inch.
Having thus described my invention,
What 1' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent otthe United States, is-- 1. So constructing the opening in the partition between finishing apartment b and the others, that the bottom of this opening, being above the bottom of these latter, they cannot get empty and burn.
2. Dropping'the finishing apartment 7/ lower than the others.
3. The combination and arrangement of dampers e and f with the pan 0, constructed with its several apartments, as set forth.
4. The combination of pan 0, damper f, cold-air passage g, and fine d.
5. The evaporator, constructed, arranged, and operated in the manner substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
. JAMES HARRIS.
