BUTTON.
No. 585,528. Patented June 29,1897.
WTNESSES EF-T. N VENTOR CHARLIE II. LONG, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,528, dated J' une 29, 189'?.
Application iiled March 6, 1897. Serial No. 626,219. (No model.)
T0 all zoll/0772, t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLIE H. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in buttons, and particularly to the class known as bachelors buttons, whereby devices are provided for readily attaching buttons to a garment without using thread or sewing the same on.
Vith the above ends in view my invention consists in the particular construction of a clamp which engages the button in connection with a disk having a screw which is passed through the garment and engages the clamp to hold the several parts in `positive engagement with each other, all as will be hereinafter fully set torth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, Figure l is a perspective view showing my device applied to a garment. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a view with the parts separated.
The numerals l l designate the members of the clamp which engage the button, said members consisting of strips of spring metal, the ends of which are tapered to a point and turned over toward each other, as shown, the under portion of said members being recessed, so that when placed together they will lock and the upper and lower edges lie flush. These members or strips l l are provided centrally with threaded apertu res, with which engages a screw-threaded pin 2, projecting from a disk or plate This screw-threaded pin is adapted to be forced through the garment, after which the members l l of the clamp are turned thereon, and then the button is sprung into place, so that the inturned ends of said members will securely embrace the same. The clamp or members thereof are constructed to receive either a flat button or one having curved edges, and when the inturned ends engage the same they will lie snugly against its outer face.
It will be understood that instead of recessing the members l l of the clamp they could be made plain, but by providing the recesses they will lie closer to the innerI side of the button.
The device herein shown and described provides a simple, cheap, and effective means for readily connecting a button to a garment, and where convenient the opening through which the pin 2 passes can be formed by an eyelet which would prevent the material of which the garment is made fraying out at the opening. It will also be understood that the `pin 2 is of sufficient length to locate the button a slight distance from the garment to allow it to engage the buttonhole of another part of the garment. Y
As the parts of the button-holder or device are held together by a threaded pin or screw they can be quickly separated to detach the button, thereby providing a device that can be used a number of times or capable of use as atemporary fastening for abutton.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device for attaching buttons to garments, consisting of the members lA l having tapered ends which are turned inward to ward each other and provided centrally with threaded apertures which register with each other, together with a screw or threaded pin extending from a disk and passing through the garment to engage the threaded openings of the strips or members l l ofthe clamp that holds the button, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device for attaching buttons to garments, comprising separable spring-metal strips l l the ends of which are tapered and turned inward toward each other, the intere mediate portions of said strips beingrecessed to interlock and provided with threaded apertures; together with a screw or threaded pin projecting from a disk adapted to engage the threaded apertures of the members of the clamp, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
