CLASP FOR HOSE-SUPPORTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,744, dated June 20, 1905.
Application filed October 12, 1904. "Serial No. 228,185.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1. JOHN A. YA'rns', a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock- ,port, in the county of Spencer and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps for Hose-Supporters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form ,a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clasps designed for use in supporting hose; and the object of the invention is to produce a device of this character so constructed that hosiery will not be torn when strain is brought to bear upon the same when engaged by the clasp.
More specifically, the invention comprises two clasp members each provided with a projection or shoulder and designed to present a considerable surface to the opposite sides of the hose, whereby the strain may be distributed over a considerable area thereof instead of concentrating the strain at one point, which is the case with the clasps which are ordinarily used for hose-supports.
My invention consists, further, in the provision of a hose-supporting device of the nature described having means for preventing the clasp members from becoming accidentally detached.
My invention consists, further, in other details of construction and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
1 illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure '1 is a perspective view showing my improved clasp members fastened to the ends of hose-supporting straps. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the inner of the two clasp members, showing the convexed projections from the lower corners thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the outer member, showing the button-receiving slot and the curved projections at one end thereof and also the button-retaining spring upon the clasp members. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view through the shank of the button. and Fig. 7 is a detail view showing a slight modification of the form of spring employed upon the plate illustrated in Fig. 3.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the outer of the clasp members, which is provided with a button-receiving slot or aperture A, having a reduced or choked portion (a midway its length and a transverse slot B at the upper end thereof for the reception of the end of a hose-supporting strap. A spring (3, either formed integral with the clasp member A or attached thereto, is provided for the purpose of assisting in holding the shank portion of a button D, which is integral with or fastened to the second clasp member D. Said spring is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings as formed integral with the clasp member A by upsetting an edge thereof and in the modified form in Fig. 7. Said spring is so arranged that a contracted opening is formed for the passage of the shank portion of a button, as will be readily understood. In order to allow the shank portion of the button to pass freely through the contracted space in said button aperture or slot A, said shank portion of the button is formed elongated in cross-section, as shown in the detail View, Fig. 6 of the drawings, and by this construction and arrangement of parts the clasp members may be held so that their longitudinal centers will be in the same plane.
Projecting from the lower portion of the plateA are two curved shoulders or wings E, and F F designate similar curved shoulders projecting from the lower portion of the second plate D and are concaved to receive the convexed curved wings or shoulders E and between which portions of said plates the fabric of a hose is adapted to he clamped. The button D projects centrally from the plate D and intermediate the two transverse slots H and H, which are provided for the reception of one end of a hose-supporting strap K, as shown clearly in Fig. l of the drawings.
In adjusting the hose to the clasp members a portion of the leg of the hose is placed over the plate D and the button D and said button inserted through the enlarged portion of said slot A, and afterward the plate A is drawn up, so that the shank portion of the button will pass through the contracted portion A, said spring yielding to allow the shank portion of the button to pass into the lower portion of the slot, after which the wings E will bear against the concaved portions F of the plate D and the hose will be securely held by said clasps. By the provision of the large area of the convcxed and concaved portions of said plates which frictionally engage the hose it will be observed that the frictional clamping-surface of the hose being distributed over a large area will be less likely to tear the hose when strain comes upon the same than would be the case if the clamping of the hose by the clasps was confined to a much less area, which is the case with hose-supports commonly used.
While I have shown a particular detailed form of hose-supporting apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may vary the details of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hose-supporting device comprising two clasp members, straps secured thereto, one of said members being provided with a button and the other with a button-receiving slot, each of said members being provided with wings adapted to form clamping-surfaces for engagement with a hose, as set forth.
2. A hose-supporting device comprising two clasp members, straps to which the same are secured, one of said members being provided with a button and the other slotted to receive said button, each of said members being provided with wings adapted to cooperate to form clamping-surfaces to engage a hose, and
means for preventing the two members from being accidentally detached from each other, as set forth.
3. A hose-supporting device comprising two clasp members, straps secured to the same, a button upon one of said members and the other member slotted to receive said button, each of said members being provided with projections adapted to cooperate with each other to form clamping-surfaces to hold the hose, a
spring secured to said slotted member and adapted to engage the shank portion of said button to prevent the clasps from being accidentally separated, as set forth.
4. A hose-supporting device comprising two clasp members, straps secured thereto, a button projecting from one of said members, the other member having a slot provided with a contracted portion adapted to receive said button, a spring integral with said slotted member and positioned adjacent to the marginal outline of said slot and adapted to hold said button against accidental disengagement from said slotted member, each of said members having projecting wings adapted to cooperate with each other to form clamping means for engagement with a hose, as set forth.
5. A hose-supporting device comprising two clasp members, straps secured. thereto, a button projecting from one of said members and the other member being provided with a button-receiving slot having a contracted pertion, a spring carried by said slotted member adjacent to the margin of the button-aperture therein and designed to engage and retain the shank portion of said button, each member having a pair of laterally-extending wings designed to cooperate, the wings of one member respectively with those of the other to form clamping means to engage a hose, as set forth.
