SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,964, dated June 22, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we,VALENrINE M. SCHMITZ and J AOOB F. SCHMITZ, of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Guards; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to improvements in trousers guards designed especially to be used by bicycle-riders to prevent the trousers from being caught in the sprocket-chain or other moving part of the machine, being also adapted for horseback-riders to prevent the trousers working up, and also for pedestrians to protect the ankles against wind, snow, and mud, and has for its object to provide a device of this character that can be left at all times on the trousers and which will be concealed from view and will not destroythe set of the trousers nor incommode the wearer when not riding.

To this end the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be now described, and the particular features of novelty set forth in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the device in open position attached to the leg of a pair of trousers, the latter being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view showing the device in the act of being closed, and Fig. 3 is a view showing it in a closed position. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail views showing modified forms of the device.

Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.

Broadly stated, the device consists of two members pivoted or hinged together and attached to the inside of the outer portion of the legs of the trousers, near the bottom thereof and preferably within the hem, one of the membersadapted to be turned outward and back on the other member, therebyfoldin g the front part of the trousers-leg back and tightening the trousers about the wearers ankles, so that there will be no liability of theirbeing caught by the bicycle-wheel or sprocket-chain or drawing up out of place.

In carrying our invention into effect two pieces of wire of suitable size are bent to form the loops A B, the two loops being pivotally connected together in the present instance by means of the hooks and eyes a 19, formed on the ends of the wires, the whole device being secured to the trousers by stitches.

It will be noted that the pivotal points of connection are arranged diagonally opposite each other, from which it results that when the moving member is swung back upon the other member it will assume the position indicated in Fig. 3, thereby following the direction the fold will take when folded back.

The parts may be held in closed position by the springiness of the material of the de vice or by the friction between the parts.

Instead of securing the device to the trousers by means of stitches the ends of the wires after being formed into the eyes a may be continued and formed into penetratingpins 0, as shown in Fig. 4, which may be stuck into the trousers and the device held thereby, and these may be supplemented by other pins or prongs D, carried near the outer ends of the device, as shown in Fig. 5.

While the device has been described as being formed of wire, this is not essential, as it may be formed of metal plate, as shown in Fig. 6, without departing from the spirit of our invention.

Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new is- 1. A trousers-guard consisting of two members, pivotally connected together, and having the pivotal points of connection arranged diagonally opposite to each other; substantially as described.

2. Atrousers-guard consisting of two loops, each formed of a single piece of wire, pivotally connected together, and having the penetrating-hooks formed at the ends of the wire extending across the loops; substantially as described.

3. In atrousers-guard the combination with the two members each formed of a single piece of wire, the ends of the wire being bent to form hooks and eyes whereby the two members may be pivotally connected, the ends of the Wire forming the eyes being eontinned and formed into securing-pron gs; substantially as described.
