SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,573, dated February 8, 1898. Application filed January 18, 1897- Serial No. 619,583. (No model.)
T0 or whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BARBARA MORRISON PEACH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lauri um,county of Houghtomand State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Suspending or Holding Skirts, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to devices for suspending or holding skirts, waists, cloaks, or other articles of apparel; and it has for its object, to provide a simple and improved device of this character which is adapted to be detachably and removably connected to the garment instead of being permanently sewed or secured in position, which will effectually obviate tearing or damage, and which will possess advantages in point of simplicity, inexpensiveness, convenience, adaptability, and general efficiency.
In the drawing the figure is a perspective view illustrating the device which is adapted to support a skirt in connection with a Waist or belt while the garment is being worn.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a flexible strap, of any suitable fabric or mate rial, carrying at one end a hooked device 13, adapted to be engaged with the garment.
The hooked device is preferably formed of a single piece of Wire bent to form an approximately U shaped central portion b,froni the end of which the wire is carried independently in opposite directions, as at b, and then turned reversely or rearwardly to form pointed engaging ends or prongs 12 running parallel with the approximately U-shaped central portion. The side members 12 17 of the approximately U-shaped central portion are preferably turned inwardly or arranged in convergent position, as shown.
The ends of the strap A are connected with the bottom crossbar b of the approximately U-shaped portion. This connection may be formed in any suitable manner; but I prefer to turn the endof the strap upon itself around the cross-bar 72 as shown at a, andbind this turned end by a plate O, having prongs binding the folds of the strap.
It will be understood that this improved suspending device may be readily connected with any kind of garment and that it will effectually serve to suspend or hold the same in the desired position and in the same manner as the ordinary permanent suspendingstraps and similar devices now commonly employed.
As shown, one end of the strap A is provided with a hook E, adapted to form a detachable connection with the hook member B at that end. This construction and adaptation of my improved suspending device is especially designed for supporting a skirt in connection with a dress-Waist or the like, so that the garments will not pull apart at the waist while being worn, the detached hooked member B being secured to the waistband of the skirt, while the otherconnected hooked member 13, carrying the strap A, is engaged with the dress-waist, and the end hook E can be readily engaged with or detached from the hooked member B upon the skirt.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture and trade, a detachable supending device, comprising the flexible strap A, a hooked member 13 formed of a piece of wire bent into a U -shaped central portion 1), horizontal portions Z) extended therefrom and reversely turned ,poin ted prongs 17 running parallel with the U-shaped central portion, the side members of the U shaped portion b 6 turned inwardly,
said hooked member suspended centrally from one end of strap A, a hook E connected to the other end of the strap and another member 13 of like character attached by its central portion to the hook E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionlI have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of J anuary, 1897.
.JoHN MEYER,
MARTIN B. KUHN.
