To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN THOMAS Bnon- NAX, a citizen of the United States, and a resifirst of which is, that it provides for a morev even distribution of the weight of the suspended article, while its cost is but a trifle when compared therewith.

The main part of my device is preferably made of linen, cotton, or other textile 'fabric, and is provided with a tongue or free end having button-holes therein for engaging buttons, as hereinafter described, and thus to connect with the second portion thereof. The latter part is made of rubber or other elastic material, and ,provided with means for fastening to the main portion, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

The main portion of the device is designed to be secured to a shirt or vest, either by stitching the same thereto, or in other suitable and substantial manner, while the second portion is intended to connect with the suspended article by means of buttons or hooks.

On the drawings, Figure 1 is a detached view of the upper section of the device, four of which are used to each settwo for the front and two for the back of the upper garment. Fig. 2 is a modification of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents the lower section of the front set, and Fig. 4 the lower section of the rear set. Fig. 5 is another modification of the upper section, showing that the same can be made of metal and secured to a re-enforcement on the shirt or. vest by means of metallic fastenings of the pattern commonly usedfor securing sheets of paper together. Fig. 6 represents a shirt provided with my suspending device and a pair of pants connected therewith.

The letter A designates the upper section of the device, which, as before stated, is preferably made of linen or other fabric which will admit of washing, so as to avoid the trouble of removal when the soiled clothing is thrown into the wash. This section is provided with a tongue, B, affording means for connection with the lower section. The tongue may be made plain, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to be clasped by the buckle; or it can be provided with button-holes c c, to permit of its being held in a looped form by a button, d, which is sewed or otherwise secured to the main part of the device, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. If the upper, section, A, is made of metal, its tongue should be bent into an oblate hook, as shown in Fig. 5, and the main portion of the device should be providedwith perforations f f, for the passage of the ends of metal staples G, whereby the device is secured to the re-enforcement H of an upper garment. The said re-enforcement should be provided with eyelets or stitched holes h h, to prevent rapid wear or tear of same by the staples. The lower section consists of an elastic strip, I, having buttonholes 13 to connect with the buttons on the waistband of the pants or lower garment. These strips are each provided with an ordinary buckle, L, for engaging the tongue of the upper section, A, either by clasping the same or by resting within aloop formed thereby.

The merits of this invention consist not only in its adaptability for supporting the lower garments, but in its certainty of holding down the upper garment, and thereby causing the same to fit the wearer both neatly and comfortably.

I am aware that suspending-straps have been applied directly to the shirt; but these, so far as I am aware, have been connected to the yoke or shoulder portion thereof, a combination which has a tendency to cause the shirt ance to the wearer, which is the object of my invention to avoid.
