SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,746, dated May 4, 1897.
Application tiled Tulle 6, 1896. Serial No. 594,516. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MICHEL- FELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in shirts, and especially to the bands thereof, and has for its object to so form and arrange the band of a shirt as to permit of the securing of the detachable collar thereto without requiring a button in the immediate rear of said band.
It is well known in the medical profession that great injury sometimes occurs from the pressure of a collar-button upon the back of the neck immediately above the spine, and this pressure is a source of annoyance, even though no perceptible injury can be traced thereto. The aim of my invention is to overcome this difficulty and at the same time attach a collar to the collar-band of the shirt as securely as heretofore, if not more so.
IVith these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated bythe claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation in detail, referring to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specificatiomin which- Figure l represents a portion of a shirt, showing the collar-baud and inode of securing its meeting edges to one side of the rear central line thereof; Fig. 2, a rear view of a shirt having my improvement embodied therein and also showing a collar adapted for attachment to the collar-band thereof; Fig. '3, a horizontal section of a portion of the collarband upon an enlarged scale, and Fig. 4 a detailed perspective of the hook-plate which is permanently secured to one side of the collarband.
In carrying out my invention Iso form the collar-band A that when attached to the shirt B the end C thereof will terminate upon the rear central line of the shirt and the end I) will overlap the first-named end and may be secured thereto by an ordinary collar-button E, being passed through the buttonholes formed through both ends of the collar-band, as clearly shown. in Figs. I and 3. For strength and appearance I prefer to carry down a strip of binding F from the collar-band, which forms one of the meeting` edges of the opening in the shirt through which the head of the wearer is passed. A thin plate G, of aluminium or other suitable material, is stitched between the layers of the neckband to one side of the center thereof, and this plate is formed with a hook II, which is arranged to project from the collar-band and is adapted to engage with the crosswise eyelets I, formed in the collar J. IVhen attaching this collar to the collar-band, the process is to first engage the eyelet I with the hook II and then the buttonhole K with the button E and finally secure the front ends of the collar to the collar-button placed in the ordinary but* tonhole L. The hook II serves not only as a fastening for one side of the collar, but also to prevent the necktie from rising up on that side of the neck. By this arrangement no hard substance is located in a position upon the shirt to rest upon the bony portion of the nec'k or the spine, thus doing away with the most objectionable feature in the wearing of shirts of ordinary design. By my improvement but little expense is added to the cost of making a shirt, and yet from the hygienic standpoint a shirt embodying my improve- Inent is of the greatest importance to the wearer.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is As a new article of manufacture, a shirt having an opening at its back, and provided with a collar-band having a horizontally-proj eeting end, which end overlaps the other end of the band and is fastened thereto by a button, combined with a metallic plate Ghavin g a hook II, on its outer end; the button being placed upon one side of the opening and the plate G upon the other, so as to relieve the spinal column of all pressure of a button at that point; the plate serving the double function of a fastening for the collar on one side and preventing the cravat from rising on the collar, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
IVM. MICHELFELDER.
