HAT-CLIP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,701, dated February 9, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELIAS S. SHOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawn, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Clips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to hat-clips.

My object is to provide a simple, cheap, and easily-applied clip adapted for attachment to the depressed portion inside of the hat and which will keep it in proper position and shape.

Having the foregoing object in view, my

invention consists of a hat-clip of improved and novel construction, as will appear more fully in the following description and appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view looking up into the interior of an ordinary slouch hat, showing my clip in position; Fig. 2, a cross-section of a hat equipped with the clip, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the clip.

The numeral 1 designates an ordinary slouch hat which is provided with a depressed or creased portion 2 of its crown.

I will now describe my improved clip, which is constructed of a single piece of spring-wire. This piece of wire is bent into two frames 3 and 4, each being composed of a longitudinally-extending piece 5 and downwardly-extending portions 6 and 7. It will be seen that the portions 6 and 7 of the respective frames are located close together and adapted to firmly bind or pinch the hat between them. \Vhere each downwardly-extending portion or frame is connected to the longitudinallycxtending portion it is bent outwardly, as at 8, so that in applying the clip the creased portion of the hat will more readily slip in between the longitudinally-extending portions and pass between the arms or downwardlyextending portions.

In applying my improved clip the creased portion of the crown is passed in between the longitudinally extending portions of the frames and the clip then pressed upwardly, so that the said creased portion will pass in between the spring-arms and be firmly pinched thereby, holding it in proper position and shape.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The herein-described clip for hats, the same consisting of a frame made of a single piece of metal, which frame consists of two members, each of which has a longitudinal bar, and outwardly-extending bars at the ends of said longitudinal bar, the two members being located close together and adapted to receive the creased portion of the hat between them.

2. 'lhe'herein-described clip composed of a single piece of spring-wire which is bent into substantially U shape being composed of two members each of which has a longitudinallyextending portion and two downwardly-extending portions the two longitudinally-extending portions being separated and the sets of downwardly-extending portions being nor mally in contact with each other.
