TOY SNAKE- Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SARAH Sunni/IAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Toy Snakes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention pertains to a toy snake, and has for its object to provide a construction whereby the body or trunk of the snake will be extremely pliable, so that when grasped at any point, it will twist and curve in different directions, making the impression as if it were alive. I

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2 a longitudinal horizontal section; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the toy showing the same twisted or curved, and \Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged longitudinal cross sections of the head and a part of the trunk showing the arrangement and the operation of the forked tongue; Fig. 6 is a vertical cross section through Fig. 1.

The toy snake consists of a head a the trunk b and a tail 0. The rear end of the head and the front end of the tail are provided with central vertical notches d in which the ends of a tape or hand 0 extending between them are attached. The tape or band according to the shape of the trunk of a natural snake is of variable width, the same being narrower at its head and tail portion, and wider in the middle of the trunk. Each side of the tape is entirely covered with and has attached to it a series of wedged shaped members f of which those in the middle portion of the trunk-are thicker and largerthan those at the head and tail ends, i. e.the size of the memhcrs varies in accordance with the width of the tape. The members of the series at one side of the tape are symmetrically and oppositely disposed to those of the other. In each series, the members have their sloping surface and acute angle directed toward the head and are succc-sivcly arranged in contact with each other.

Owing to the angular space formed between the neighboring members in each series and to the different sizes thereof, the said members will act like the vertebrae of a natural snake, rendering the trunk oxtremelyfpliable and permittinght io twist or curve in either direction.

To add to the likeness of this toy with the natural snake, the same is provided with a ork d tongue j which I form of a thin wire that is loosely passed through a longitudinal perforation h in the head and is extended through a few of the'neighboring H ml I licxt to the head. In order to have this forke tong operating and moving in and out, the longitudin l P 1- i'oration h in the head and the perforations h 1i? the members are arranged at the side of and parallel to h longitudinal axis of the snake. The rearcnd oi th wire is fixed at t in the body of the toy. When the forward portion of the snake is twisting, the wire will be retracted into the month, and on the other hand, when the same sti'ctchcs, the wire will project outward from within the mouth.

The head, tail and the members are preferably made of wood, but may also be made of any other suitable material as clay or the like, the same being painted to conceal the joint crevices and to have the color of a natural snake.

What 'I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout is:

1. A toy snake. comprising n hend, mu, and a hand of flexible material having its ends secured in said head and tail and a series of wedge shaped mcmbers covering and niinched to each side of said band, the band being narrowest at its end and the wedgeshnped members of grnduni'cd size to correspond to the width of said hand. substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A'toy snake. comprising :1 head. toil and hand of flexible mnierinl having its ends secured in the said head and tail and carrying members constituting therewith :1 trunk. a forked wire loosely extending through the head and partly through the trunk pnrnllel'to the central axis thereof, the rear end of snid wire being secured within the trunk nnd the forward end thereof forming the tongue and being adapted to project within the month by the twisting of the trunk, substantially as and for ihc pur' pose specified.
