PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BRAUN, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
DIECOlRATlVE DEVICE;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 732,513, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed January 15, 1903. derial No. 139,125. tlfl'o model.) v
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BRAUNpa citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Decorative Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a substitute for evergreens for use in decorating houses, halls, churches, and other places on holidays and other times, a further object being to provide artificial means for'making garlands, festoons, runners, stringers, &c.;
and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the artificial decorating device or devices hereinafter described and claimed. 7
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom pan ying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan View showing one of my improved decorating devices packed or bunched together; Fig. 2, asectionon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, but showing the bunch or package extended to form a festoon, stringer, or
runner.
The bunch or package of decorating material consists of end members a, each of which comprises a central portion a and four ra-' dially-arranged leaves a and these end members care connected by a central cord Z) and are reinforced by central stifiening-pieces c, which are secured thereto by paste or other adhesive material c as shown in Fig. 2.
One end of the cord 1) is secured to one of the end members a and preferably to the reinforcing member 0 thereof, as shown at 12 in any desired manner, and said cord is passed loosely through saidend member and through said reinforcing member 0, as shown at 0 and also loosely through the other end member a, as shown at c, and the end thereof is secured to said last-named end member or the reinforcing member 0 thereof, as shown at W. The cord 1) may be of any desired length, and loosely strung thereon between the end members a are a plurality of. intermediate members 01, each of which consists of a central part d and two side parts (i and each of these parts d and 01 consists of a central body portion having four radially-arranged leaf members (1 and the central body portions are bound together or secured together by paste or other adhesive material, as shown at d all this being best shown in Fig. 8. The adjacent leaf members (:1 of the side parts 01 are connected at their points, as shown at 01, this connection being made in any desired manner; but the leaf members 61 of each of the central parts d are left free, as shown at (1 and are. also of less diameter than the other parts of the intermediate members d, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and when all the intermediate members (1 are loosely connected at the points of the leaves of the side parts thereof, as shown and described, and the intermediate members d connected with the end members a it will be apparent that by taking hold of the cord (7 where one end thereof is secured to the reinforcing pieces c-as, for
instance, at b in Fig. 2and pulling upwardly thereon the other part or end member a opposite the pointb and the intermediate members d may be strung along the cord 1) to any desired length, and long ropes, reaches, stretchers, runners, or festoons may be formed in this manner similar to those usually formed of evergreens, such as cedar, pine,
holly, and the like.
In practice the end members a are prefer.- ably'stamped from pasteboard or other suitable material and at the same time embossed, so as to represent leaves, and this is also true of the separate parts of the intermediate members (1; but the said separate parts of the intermediate members (1 are preferablymade of much thinner material than the end members a, and the leaf members of all of said .and the leaves may of course be of any desired shape and of any preferred flexible material. I also preferably place at intervals a flower e, which is composed of many sheets of tissue-paper and the edges of which are convoluted, and said sheets are secured together centrally and folded and set into the intermediate members d, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and these flowers may be composed of yellow, red, or other colored tissue-paper and in practice are placed at regular intervals in the bunch or package, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2,) and when said bunch or package is extended, as shown in Fig. 3, the said flowers appear at regular intervals and may be on any side or part of the extended rope and may extend entirely around the same, as desired, and the entire device as thus formed makes a very artistic and beautiful decoration. I
My invention is in no way limited to the material employed nor to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, and any suitable flexible material may be employed and the construction may be varied within broad limits without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A decorative device comprising a cord and a package of decorative material loosely mounted thereon and consisting of separate end members and intermediate members formed to represent evergreens, said cord beend members and intermediate members.
formed to represent evergreens, said cord being connected with one of the end members of said package, the intermediate members being composed of three parts secured together centrally, the adjacent parts of the intermediate members being connected at their edges and the intermediate members being also connected with the end members, and the central parts of the intermediate members being left free at their edges, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 13th day of January, 1903.
