' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MIRACLE, OF WOODVIElV, OHIO, ASSIGNO R OF ONE-HALF TO J. O. MIRACLE, OF DE GRAFF, OHIO.
FRUIT-JAR AND FASTENING THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,967, dated January 26, 1897 Application fil d June 13, 1896. Serial No. 595,465. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MIRACLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of IVoodview, in the county of Morrow and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars and Fastenings Therefor; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of theinvention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through top portion of jar. Fig. 3 is a side view of same.
This invention is designed to provide a fruit-jar and fastening device therefor of improved character; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the body of the jar, having the neck portion A. This neck portion a short distance below the month has a broad annulus or flange B ofiset therefrom and formed with flat horizontal upper and lower faces.
0 designates the cover, which has recessed or hollow upper and lower faces, whereby are formed the oppositelyextending marginal flanges c 0'. The flange 0 forms the seatingflange, the usual packing-ring D being interposed between its seating edge and the upper face of the flange ]3. Flange c has a broad flat upper edge upon which the jar is designed to rest in vertical position, and is cut away at diametrically opposite points, as indicated at Said clamp comprises a thin flat metallic bar or strap E, having at each end a depending hinged or pivoted clamp-lug E, whose hooked lower end is arranged to engage under the flange B, the bar or strap being seated across the top of the cover. The cut-away portions or notches cl bring the upper face of the bar or strap below the upper edges of the flange 0, so that when the jar is inverted there are no projections to interferewith its standing securely on said flange. The said bar or strap is of spring material and has a central bearing upon the cover formed by a raised boss 0 thereof.
The cover being seated upon the jar, one of the clamp-lugs E is engaged under the flange B. The strap is then brought across the top of the cover and down against the boss 0, whereby it is sprung sufficiently to permit the other clamp-lug to be engaged with the flange B, the cover being in this manner securely held in place. By pressing down upon either end portion of the strap, between the boss 0 and the flange c, the clamp-lug at that side can be readily disengaged. The notches d are made sufficiently deep to permit this action.
It will be apparent from the above that the action of seating and unseating is a very simple one. Aside from this, however, the construction of the jar and the arrangement of the clamp in such a manner that the jar can be inverted is important, since in such position the contents of the jar form a seal against the entrance of air. As commonly constructed, fruit-jars having what is known as clamp-fastenings cannot be so inverted, owing to the fact that portions of the clamp project beyond the top of the cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the jar having the surrounding flange a short distance below its neck, and the cover having a marginal vertical flange upon both faces thereof, that upon its upper face being notched or cut away at opposite points, said cover having also upon its upper face a central boss or projection, of a clamp comprising a spring bar or strap designed to extend across the said cover at the notched portions thereof, and to bear upon said boss or projection, and a hooked clamplug hinged or pivoted to each end portion of said bar or strap and designed to engage underneath the flange of the jar, said clamp and cover being without projections above the plane of the upper edge of the upper marginal flange of said cover, whereby the jar may rest upon the cover in inverted position substantially as specified.
2. The combination with the jar having the IOC surrounding flange B, a short distance below the mouth, and with the cover 0, having the flanges 0 c and the boss 0' said flange c having a broad flat upper edge and being cut away or notched at opposite points, of the clamp comprising a thin spring-metal strap E arranged to seat across the top of the jar upon the boss 0 and in the notches thereof, below the upper edges of the flange c and the hooked clamp-lugs E hinged or pivoted one to each end of said strap, said clamp and
