SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,656, dated May 5, 1896.

Be it known that I, GERHARD ZnILsTRA, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Bung, of which the following is a full, clear,l and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved bung, arranged for convenient insertion in and removal from a barrel or like vessel, and adapted to be securely locked in place to prevent leakage of the liquid or gases contained in the barrel or other vessel.
The invention consists principally of a fasarms adapted to be spread and engage the inside of a barrel at the sides of the bung-- hole, and a cam-lever for actnatin g said arms.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the improvement as applied and with the bung fastened in place. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the saine with the bung unlocked. Fig. is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 4 is an inverted sectional pla-n view of the same on the line l i of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
The improved bung A is preferably made of sheet metal and formed with a hollow conical body A', formed at its upper end with an outwardly-extending annular flange A2, under which rests a packing-rin g A3, of rubber or other suitable material, and adapted to engage the outside of the barrel around the bun g-hele, as is plainly shown in Figs. l and 2.
In the base A1t of the bung A is arranged, centrally, a downwardly-extending bearing A5 for the upper end of a vertically-disposed rod I3, provided on its upper end with an eye i3', engaged by a cam-lever C, located within the body A', and adapted to draw the rod B upward in its bearing to lock the bung in On the lower end of the rod B is held a spreader D, preferably made with springarms D and D2, extending upwardly and out wardly, so as to forni at their upper ends downwardly and inwardly extending guidearms D3 and D, respectively, engaging guides F and F2, formed on a keeper F, secured to the under side of the base A* of the bung A. The arms D D2 of the spreader D normally extend at their upper ends beneath the base A4 of the bung, so that the latter can be conveniently inserted in the bung-hole with the rod B and spreaderD extending inside of the barrel, as indicated in Fig. 2. Now when the rod B is in this position the cani-lever C is open, and when it is desired to lock the bung A securely in place and draw it tightly into the bung-hole then the operator swings the cam-lever C downward into the position shown in Fig. l, whereby the rod I3 is drawn upward with the spreader D. This upward movement of the arms D and D2 of the spreader D causes the guide-arms DS and DVL to slide in the guides F' and F2, respectively, whereby the said arms D" D2 are moved outwardly to engage the inside of the barrel on opposite sides of the bung-hole, and at the saine time the bung A is iirmly drawn downward, owing to the upper ends of the arms D D2 resting against the inside of the barrel.
In order to prevent leakage of the gases at the bearing A5, I provide the rod D with an annular oiset or collar B2, adapted to be seated on an elastic packing-ring G, held on the lower end of the bearing Ai", said collar B2 being firmly pressed in contactwith the lower face of said packing-ring when the rod B nieves into an uppermost position.
Now it will be seen that by the arrangement described the bung A is drawn very tightly into the bung-hole to prevent leakage, and at the same time the bung is securely locked in place to prevent accidental or other displacement. When it is desired to remove the bung, then the operator, by the use of a suitable tool, (see dotted lines 1,) simply swings the cam-lever C upward into the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the rod B is moved downward and the spreader-arms D D2 are 5o place, as hereinafter more fully described. caused by spring action to automatically roo move inward toward each other to permit of removing the bung from the bung-hole by simply pulling upward on the cam-lever C.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-N 1. A bung, provided with a fastening device, having a spreader provided with springyielding arms adapted to spread and engage the inside of the barrel at the sides of the bung-hole, and a cam-lever for actuating said arms, substantially as shown and described.
