SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,921, dated January 12, 1897.

Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM LLOYD, a subject of the Queen of Great- Britain, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in toilet shirt-front protectors, and has for its object to provide a device of this description which may be readily attached to the person of the wearer so asto cover the shirt-front and thereby protect the latter from being soiled during the washing of the face or arranging of the hair.

WVith these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation in detail, referring by letter to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a person having my improved shirt-protector secured over the front of the shirt; Fig. 2, a rear view of said person, showing the method of attaching the protector to the rear collar-button; and Fig. 3 a perspective of the device when out of use.

In carrying out my invention I form the body A of the protector of a water-repellent material, such as rubber or rubber-coated stockinet, and so shape it that it will readily adapt itself to the person of the wearer and at the upper end thereof form a neckband B, also of waterproof material, which terminates in the straps 0, one of which is provided with a hook D and the other with a clasp E, having a hole F therein for passage over the rear collar-button, and a .loop G, with which the hook D may engage. These straps are of elastic, so as to accommodate varying sizes of necks.

To the lower portion of the body A, upon either edge thereof, are secured the metallic hooks H, adapted to engage with the suspender-straps I, which are usually worn by men, and these hooks serve to hold the lower portion of the protector in place.

In applying my improved protector to a shirt-front it is only necessary to pass the straps 0 around the neck and engage the clasp E with the rear collar-button by passing the hole F over said button and then engage the hook D with the loop G. After this has been done the hooks II are engaged with the suspender-st-raps by drawing the latter inward and afterward permitting them to resume their normal position.

By the use of my improved protector it is obvious that no moisture or other foreign substance likely to soil the shirt-front can gain access thereto, and this is of great advantage to a person when washing the face, cleaning the teeth, or arranging the hair, as it obviates the necessity of removing the shirt during such operations and yet prevents said shirt from being soiled.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is A shirt-protector consisting of a waterproof body having a waterproof neckban-d secured thereto, said neckband terminating in elastic straps, a hook attached to one of the straps, a clasp attached to the other having a hole for the passage of the collar-button and a loop to engage the hook and metallic hooks bent inward secured to the sides of the protector to engage the suspenders as and for the purpose described.
