To It whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE WILDMAN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Rotherhithe, London, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats and other Articles of Wearing-Apparel, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 8,987, bearing date May 6,1895) of which the following is a specification.

This invention is designed to improve the fit of hats, caps, and other articles of Wearingapparel and to gain other advantages.

In carrying out the invention, say in the case of a straw hat, there are provided around the interior one or more projections or films or narrow pieces of fabric, and let into or attached to the inner edge thereof is a band or cord, preferably of india-rubber or similar elastic material, so disposed that when the hat is pressed onto the head the piece or pieces of fabric take a clinging hold, which tends to prevent the hat being blown off, but yet does not interfere with easy removal by hand.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a part sectional view of a straw hat having one projection applied to illustrate the invention by way of example. Fig. 2 shows a like view, the section being taken through the front of a straw hat. Fig. 3 shows the hat by a sectional view drawn to a smaller scale looking toward the front. Fig. 4 shows a like View to Fig. 3, but looking toward the back, with the knot in the elastic cord untied, allowing the projection to be placed out of use. Fig. 5 shows an under side view of the hat without the front pad.

The strip or flange a is formed by folding a strip or band of flexible material longitudinally, and at its outer edges is connected by suitable stitching a to the pad or leather or other lining b of the hat 0. This strip is caused to project inwardly by means of an elastic cord 01. passing around the hat and tied, preferably, at the back. The tension on the cord a pulls the free edge a of the strip into as small diameter as possible, thus causing it to normally project, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5.

Although in the drawings the strip a is shown continuous, it maybe interrupted more or less, as may be desired. The narrow spring inner flange thus formed may be of net or leather or other convenient material and may be applied to hats, caps, bonnets, and other articles of apparel. This construction and use of flexible projecting and holding flanges to hats and other articles to which the invention is similarly applicable also promotes most efficient ventilation of the interior of the hat or other article.

I claim-- 1. The combination with a head-covering,

as a hat, of a flexible flange attached at one edge to the interior of the hat, and a band of elastic material contained within said flange and projecting at its free ends through said flange to permit the adjustment of the tension of the elastic band, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a head-covering, as a hat, of a flexible flange attached at one edge to the interior of the hat, a band of elastic material contained within said flange, and a pad, and a pad attached to the front, interior portion of the hat, said pad covering the elastic flange and relieving the forehead of the wearer of undue pressure, substantially as described.
