UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
THOMAS W. REAGEER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SWEAT-BAND FOR HATS.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380.175, dated March 2'7, 1888.,
Application filed December 22, 1887. Serial No. 258,643.` (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: p
Beit known that I, THOMAS W. BEAGHER,
aresident of thecity, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved SweatBand 5 for Hats, of which the following is a speciicav drawings, forming part of this specification,Y
in which- `Fgure 1 is a face View of a portion of a sweat-bandv embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line o c, Fig. l, drawn on an exaggerated scale.
The letter Ain the accompanying drawings represents a portion of a sweat-band for hats and caps.
B is a strip of iexible material placed along the wearing side b of the band A and near its edge, as shown. By wearing side7 I mean the side of the band that rests against the head of the wearer. I preferably use iexible strips B, of straw or other substance, that contrast in color to the band A, by whichmeans the band A is ornamented. The flexible strip B is held in position on the band A by means, of stitches a, which pass through the band A, over the upper and lower edges of said v strip B, `over its face, and over the edges of the band A, thereby binding the edge of the strip B and of said band and holding the strip as in a loop. Thus none of the stitches pass through. the strip B, and it is held to the band without injury. I may also place on or near the raw edge of the band A a springer reed, D, which is held in place thereon by the stitches a, or by stitches of the kind shown in Letters Patent No. 367,266, dated July 26, 1887, and granted to me. Although this strip B is flexible, it will nevertheless act to somewhat stiften the edge of the band. By making the strip B thin 5o and fiat, as shown, it will present a smooth wearing-surface to the head.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is A sweat-band having ou its face or wearing side b, near its edge, a flexible dat strip, B, held in place by stitches'a,that pass through. the bandfand over the edges and face of the strip B, as described.
