UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. STATEN, OF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO.
SIGN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,584, dated January 5, 1897. Application filed February l2, 1896. Serial No. 579,082. (No model.)
To a/ZZ wltont t ntay concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. STATEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in signs; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap sign -Which can be readily changed at will each day, as the storekeeper or other person desires to change the character of the` advertisement.
It embodies a suitable support from which are suspended detachably and adj ust-ably the signs, which also are made adjustable.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure lis a front eleva-tion of my improved sign. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of a modiiied form. Figs. 4, 5, and G are details of the hooks and supporting devices. Fig. 7 is a perspective detail.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a suitable signboard, preferably of Wood, of any desired width and length and thickness, on which it is designed to print a permanent advertisement of some article or the name of the manufacturer or other advertisement, although this board may be in the nature of a blackboard, so that the sign or advertisement may be changed at will. p B are chains or cords supported from opposite ends of this board in any suitable manner and of any desired length.
O are slats of any desired number provided at or near each end'with a hole c, through Width which the cords or chains pass. These slats are adjustable in the direction of the length of the cords and chains and may be held in their adjusted positions in anysuitable mana ner-such, for instance, as by the wire hook shown in Fig. 4, placed on the under side of the slat, and the point of the hook passing through a link of the chain and holding the slat in position.
If a cord is used for the supporting device B, a iiexible Wire hook E (seen in Fig. 5) is employed instead of the hook seen in Fig. 4, the small projecting point c being driven in the slat near the cord, and the curve e of said hook springs the hook in tight against the cord, the other end engaging the slat.
F are double hooks screwed into the under sides of the slats and any distance apart. These hooks are made double, so that both sides of the holder can be used. The signs G are supported from these hooks and may be of any desired character, being preferably of Wood in the nature of a blackboard, so that the signs can be readily placed thereon with chalk and erased when it is desired to change them. These hooks can also be used for supporting articles in a storeavindow, if desired.
I also may employ elastic tapes H, the same as the slats and placed on the face sides thereof, made fast on the slats on the left hand, with tacks or otherwise, and secured to the opposite end by means of a ring and a hook I and J. This is adapted for use when a sign made from roll-paper is continu? ous from top to bottom of the holder.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the signs supported one from the other and the side cords or chains dispensed with.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-` 1. The combination with the supportingboard and the cords or chains suspended therefrom, of the slats connecting the cords or chains and the signs supported from said slats, the said slats being adjustable upon the cords or chains, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the supportingboard and the cords or chains suspended therefrom, of the slats connecting the cords or chains and the signs supported from said IOO cords or chains, and double hooks supported 1o from the slats, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this I specification in the presence of two subscrib- GEORGE 1I. STATEN.
shits, the said slats being adjustable upon the cords o1' chains, and means for holding the same in their adjusted position, substan tially as described.
3. The combination with the supportinging Witnesses. hoard and the cords or chains suspended therefrom, of the slats connecting the' cords Vitnesses: or chains -atnd the signs supported from said slats, the said shits beingadjustahie upon the W. D. MYERS, ROBERT A. CRoss.
