Description

(N0 Modl.)
- J. MOOREERY.
ADJUSTABLE OUTLET GATE FOR VENTILATING PIPES.
Patented Dec. 29, 1896.
JOSEPH M COREERY,
Parent V OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE OUTLET-GATE FOR VENTILATlNG- -PIPES.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,104, dated December 29, 1896.
I Application filed June 20, 1896.
To 'aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MCCREERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at T- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Outlet-Gates for Ventilating-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in the outlets of pipes used for ventilating.
- ring is upturned, as
'3, a section on line 3 3,"
The object of the invention is to produce an outlet from which the air may be emitted at varying angles and in different directions.
The invention consists in the construction In the drawings, Figure l'represents a face View of the device; Fig. 2, a side view; Fig. Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a detailed sectional View on line a: as, Fig. 2.
In the drawings the letter A indicates a ring by which the outlet is firmly secured to theventilating-pipe. The outer end a of this shown, forming a lip.
. Securedto the ring A, a little distance from may be made'angular, as shown.
projects loosely through a hole this lip a, is a band a, which has an upturned lip a parallel with the lip a,.there being a space a between. In this space a is loosely held the edge I) of the outlet-cap B. This cap Within the cap is the valve-frame O, in which are hinged the leaves D,forming the valve. These leaves are arranged like Venetian blinds, their pintles being pivoted in the sides 0 cof the frame 0. At one side, just outside of the frame, the ends of the leaves are connected by a rod 0, so that all the leaves inay be turned by moving one of them. At one side, between. the wall of the cap B and the side of the frame 0, there is a recess or pocket I). In this pocket is placed a plate-spring E. One end e of this spring E bears against the inner side of the pocket. The other end e'has a point 6 which in the cap B. One of the leaves D has a swell d, in which is held the inner end f of ahandle F, which passes out of thecap and has secured on its outer end a nut G. This nut G has on its inner face anumber of depressions The position of the spring E and the handle F is such that when the parts are all in place the depressions 9 will engage the point e .air not only of Serial No. 596,297. (No'modeL) Q The leaves are turned upon their pintles As the nut G is.
by operating the handle F. turned the point c When the nut is at the point (2 into one of the depressions g, and thus holds theleaves at any given point. When the leaves lie closely against each other, as shown in Fig. 1, they form an effective air-gate, and no air can be forced through the outlet. By turning the leaves at different angles varying'amounts of air are forced out, As the cap D is loosely held to the ring A the cap may be turned axially about the ring. The axial rotation of the cap throws the leaves into varying positions. These varying positions of the leaves about the plane of rotation and the varying angles of opening of the leaves produce streams of is pressed inwardly, and
ing angles; and when many of these outlets are used in the same apartment the air may be admitted into the apartment in streams which vary in their angles to one another.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. An outlet oluble cap, ing of several leaves, whereby the opening 111 the outlet may be placed in different positions and be of different sizes, as set forth.
2. The combination of the axially-revoluble cap, and the valve-frame in such cap provided with the leaves, whereby the opening in the outlet may be placed in different pos1- tions and be of difierent sizes, as set forth.
3. The combination of the ring with the aXially-revoluble cap upon such ring, and a valve in such cap, consisting of several leaves, whereby the opening in the outlet may be placed in different positions and be of different sizes, as set forth.
provided with an axially-rev- 4. The combination of the cap, B, the valve. frame, 0; the leaves, D, held in such frame; the spring, E, between the cap and frame and having the point, e projecting through a hole in the cap; and the handle, F, thenut, G, of which is provided with the depressions, g, as set forth.
rest the spring E forces varying amount, but at varyand a valve in such cap, consist- In testimony whereof affix my signature 1n presence of two. witnesses.
