Description

(No Model.)
OHSHANK. WRENCH.
Patented Apr. 20, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT Y OFFICE.
CHARLES H. SHANK, OF NOBLESVILLE, INDIANA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 580,905, dated April 20, 1897.
Application filed May 6, 1896. Serial No. 590,477. (No model.)
To (I/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. SHANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Noblesville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, the object of the same being to provide a wrench which is adapted to be fitted to a brace and has an adjustable socket to fit diiferent sizes of nuts or taps, with convenient or ready means for changing the size of said sockets.
The invention consists of a body part generally cylindrical in form, but tapering at one end and formed with a squared extension to fit a brace, the said body part being slitted longitudinally and having pivoted therein a pair of jaws formed with nut-sockets at their outer ends, springs for normally throwing said jaws outwardly, and a cap or cover for said body part having a cam-slot therein by means of which the jaws forming the sockets are readily and conveniently drawn together or thrown apart.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my wrench. Fig. 2 is a similar View at right angles thereto. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the device. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the cap, showing the ca1n-slot therein.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The body part 1 of my wrench is generally cylindrical in form, with a tapering end formed with a squared extension 2, by means of which the wrench may be attached to a suitable brace. The said body part 1 is slitted longitudinally, as shown at 3, and has pivoted therein the two jaws 4 4, which are normally held outward by a spring 5, fitting between the same. The outer ends of the jaws 4 4 are formed with sockets which are adapted to fit over the ends of nuts or taps. Fitting over the outer end of the body part 1 is a cap 6-, which is adapted to rotate and is formed with a cam-slot '7 therein, between which the shanks of the jaws 4 4 are inserted.
In using my device the squared extension 2 is inserted into a brace, and the cap 6 is turned in one direction or the other for the purpose of opening'or closing the jaws 4 4 to make them fit the nut or tap desired to be turned. It will be readily seen that the adjustment of the jaws to fit any size of nut or tap can be quickly made and that said nut or tap may be screwed into place in much less time and with much greater convenience than with an ordinary wrench formed to fit the same.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In awrench of the character described, the combination with the body part thereof having a longitudinal slit therein, of a pair of jaws pivoted at their inner ends to said body part fitting within said slit and having nut-sockets formed in their outer ends, a V- shaped spring fitting between said jaws for normally urging them outwardly and a cap or cover on the outer end of said body part mounted to rotate thereon and formed with a cam-slot through which the shanks of said jaws project and by the edges of which they are engaged, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
. 2. In a wrench of the character described, the combination with the body part thereof having a longitudinal slit therein and a tapering end with a squared extension thereon, of a pair of jaws pivoted at their inner ends to said body part fitting within said slit and having nut sockets formed in their outer ends, a V-shaped spring fitting between said jaws for normally urging them outwardly and a cap or cover on the outer end of said body part mounted to rotate thereon and formed with a cam-slot through which the shanks of said jaws project and by the edges of which they are engaged, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I11 testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES H. SHANK.
