WINDOW-VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH M. BIRKEs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St, Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ventilators and more particularly to a window ventilator and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will enable the lower sash to be raised during stormy weather, whereby to admit air and at the same time prevent rain and snow from entering the structure.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a simple device of this character which may be quickly and readily applied to use and removed when desired, the same being adjustable, thereby capable of application to window frames of various sizes.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a ventilator consisting of a pair of sections adjustably connected together and having means at the ends thereof for engaging in the spaces holdin the lower sash in place, whereby the ventilator is held in place without the use of the other apparatus.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window frame, looking from the inside, and showing my improved device applied to use;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ventilator removed; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the ventilator in use with a device for holding it in operative position.
In describing the invention, I shall refer to the drawing wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 designates a window frame of the usual or any preferred type having the usual sash guide strips 2 arranged therein between which is slidably mounted the sash 3.
It is a well known fact that during stormy weather considerable difliculty is ordinarily encountered in the proper ventilating of rooms, and my invention contemplates the provision of a device which will enable the lower sash to be raised whereby air may enter and at the same time prevent rain and snow from entering the structure. To this end I provide a device preferably formed of metal and consisting of a pair of rectangular sections 4 and 5, the upper and lower edges of the latter being bent inwardly on one face thereof as designated at 6, whereby to provide guide ways between which is slidably arranged the section 4. Thus the complete device consisting of the two sections 4 and 5 is capable of lateral adjustment to be used in connection with window frames of varied sizes. The outer end edges of each of the sections 4 and 5 from the upper edge thereof to a point below the longitudinal center of the ventilator is bent outwardly as designated at 7 to form a flange. These flanges 7 at the ends of the device form finger pieces whereby the sections may be readily and quickly adjusted to the frame and at the same time form frictional surfaces adapted to contact with the guide strips on the window frame, as clearly shown in Figs, 1 and 2 of the drawing. By forming these flanges 7 as shown, tongues or the like 8 are provided at the ends of the sections below said flanges and these tongues are adapted to extend between certain of the guide strips in the window frame as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
In positioning the ventilator in the window frame as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the same is tilted at an angle inwardly and the sash raised to a plane below or to the actual horizontal plane of the upper edge of the ventilator proper which allows air to readily enter the structure but at the same time will not admit of the rain or snow entering. Ordinarily the frictional engagement of the end flanges 7 against the guide strips and window frame will retain the device in upright and operative position,
as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, but, if desired, other apparatus may be provided, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing for the retention of the device in position.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a slightly modified form of the invention wherein a ventilator 9 of the character hereinabove described is applied in connection with a window frame 10 and a hook member 11 is engaged withone of the end flanges of said ventilator. This hook member is adapted to have its free end engaged with a guide strip of the window frame so as to obviously retain the ventilator in its proper position with respect to said window frame. Otherwise the form of the device is not changed and this hook member may be or may not be used, as desired.
I preferably construct this ventilator all of metal, but other material may be used, as
is found desirable, and in any instance it WVhile I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes inform, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of The principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a window ventilator of the class described, a pair of substantially rectangular sections, the one section having its upper and lower edges bent inwardly to provide guideways for slidably receiving the other section therebetween, the outer ends of said sections having the upper portions thereof struck outwardly to form flanges for frictional engagement with portions of a window frame, the formation of said flanges also providing tongues at the ends of said sections adapted for disposition between certain guide strips in a window frame, whereby the ventilator maybe retained in position in said window frame.
