SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,098, dated December 29, 1896.

Beit known that I, CHARLES E. LANDES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Marble-Shooting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of marble-shooting devices; and the objects of my invention are to provide a marble-shooting device or pistol of superior construction and arrangement of parts, to so construct the same as to retain the marble in plain view when the same is loaded for shooting, and to produce other improvements in details of construction which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved shooting device. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section therethrough; and Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation of the plunger, which I employ as hereinafter described.

In constructing my improved marble-shoot-- ing pistol I preferably form the same in two corresponding sections, one of which is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. These halves or sections, which are indicated at a, when united by screws, rivets, or otherwise, result in the formation, as indicated more clearly in Fig. l of the drawings, of a substantially pistol-shaped body (7. Of the pistol thus formed 0 represents the barrel, the rear portion of which forms a complete cylindenwhile the forward portion thereof has its upper side cut away, thereby producing a trough or semicylindrical channel extension of the barrel, as indicated at 0. With the cylinder portion b. is formed a rearwardly-extending guide-tube d, the latter communicating with the central portion of the cylinder 17. With the barrel portion 1) and its extension (1 is formed an up wardly-extending and rearwardly-inclined handle portion e, the latter being suitably ornamented and having the general form of a pistol-handle.

- indicated in the drawings,extends through the tubular barrel extension 61 into the barrel, and

carries within the latter on its forward end an enlarged head f. Between this. head f and the inner end of the barrel portion 1) is interposed a coil-spring f which loosely surrounds the plunger-rod f. The outer or rear end of the plunger-rod is provided with an enlargement g, which, when said plunger is driven forward, comes into contact with the end of the tubular extension 0?, thereby limiting the forward movement of said plunger. Formed on the plunger-rod at the desired point is an upwardly-projecting catch-lug g.

Within the hollow of the handle portion 6 is fulcrumed at the junction of its two arms a substantially bell-crank-shaped trigger h, the

longer arm of the latter extending through an opening h, formed in the handle portion e. The shorter arm of the trigger terminates in a short hook 7?, which, as indicated in the drawings, is adapted to engage with the catchlug g of the plunger-rodf. In order to retain the inner arm of the trigger in the position for engagement with said lug g, I provide a spring-strip t', the latter having one of its ends secured to the inner side of the handle e, and its remaining end portion bearing against the longer arm of said trigger.

In utilizing my device the plunger-head is forced inward, causing a compression of the spring f against the inner end of the barrel portion b, and at the same time resulting in an engagement of the catch-lug g of the plunger-rod with the. trigger-hook h- The pistol is then so placed that the lower side of its barrel rests on a floor or other substantially level surface, and the marble or ball is to be projected therefrom is seated in the open or channel portion 0 of the barrel. A rearward pull on the outwardly-projecting end portion of the trigger h results, as will readily be seen, in a releasing of the plunger catch-lug and in a consequent forward thrust of the springactuated plunger, this operation resulting in the ball or marble being shot forward from the pistol-barrel.

From the construction and operation which I have described it will be seen that a simple and inexpensive device is provided whereby marbles and like projectiles may be shot with considerable force and accuracy from a subherein described may be provided with any I desirable ornamentation, and that the same may be produced of metal or other suitable material.

Having now fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
