TOY GUN.v r
Patented Nov. 21, 1882.
of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State 7NITeiD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE A. ORANDLL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TOY GUN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,679,'dated November 21, 1882.
Application filed June 29, 1882.
To all whom it may concern: l
YBe it known that I, Jnssn A. URANDALL,
of New York, have invented au Improved Toy Gun, of which the following is a specification.
Figure lis a longitudinalcentral section of my improved toy'gnn. Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, of the same; Fig. 3, a top view thereof; and Fig. 4, across-section on the line c c, Fig. 3. 1
This invention relates to a new toy gun, which is calculated to throw a ball or other 'implement with considerable precision and Aquite a distance; and the invention consists in the combination of parts hereinafter more fully described.
ln the accompanying drawings, the letter A represents the stock of my improved toy gun, which stock may be in the form of the stock ot a ritle, and which connects with the rear end of a long stick, B, that takes the place, so far as appearances go, of the rifle-barrel.l In the front portion of the stockAis hung a trigger, O, which is held in the catching position by a rubber cushion, a, placed behind it into va recess formed in the stock for its reception.
D is a rod, of metal or the like, secured upon the stick B in such manner as to connect therewith or with the stock A behind the trigger, as at b, and with the stick B at the outer end of said rod D, as at d. The rod D is the guide fortheball-propellerE,whichisaslide mounted on said rod, adapted to be moved along the same from one end to the other. vThe slide lor ball propeller E connects by two rubber straps, F F, with the ends of a crossbar, e, that is fixed to the front of the stick B. The
rear ends ofthe straps F connect with the ends straps are slack, as in Fig. 2, the operator takes hold of the slide E and pulls it hack toward the trigger until the said slide arrives i near the back end of the rod D and has its (No model.)
the ball h can `be readily received, and in which, while being vpropelled forward, it will be prevented from flying out sidewise. Aim being taken, the'trigger is pulled andthe slide is at once violently thrown forward by the straps F, carrying the` hall with it and causingit. to fly in the desired direction to the extentof the force given out by the straps. The slide E is finally arrested by the cushion g.
lt will be perceived .that this gun is of very simple construction, can readily be kept in rel pair by a boy, and will be a source of great amusement. Itm ayeven be usefully employed for hunting cats on back-yard felices, or for analogous purposes.
Considerable importance is attached to the shoe-like structure of the slide E, which, as already stated, guides the ball or object to be thrown in alongitudinal direction., preventing it iiying ott' sidewise. y
rlhe success ofthe toy gun depends also upon the use of the rod D, or equivalent rib on the stick, which guides the shoelike slide in its forward motion, and insures, therefore, greater success in hitting an object. lf the rod D is of sufficient strength, the stick B can be dispensed with.
The shoe-like structure of the slide E is clearly showniu Fig. 3, where the said slide is represented as being partly composed ot' a lower cross-piece, t, which receives the rear ends of the straps F, and upon which the shoe-like body E is fastened.
ln lieu of the straps, springs may be employed. Two rods D may be used on one stock A in lieu ofone, in whiclrcase but a single propelling1 strap or spring may be employed for moving theslide. s
I claim- The combination of the stock A and stick B with the rod D, secured in said stock and in said stick, and with the cross-piece e, straps F, ball-carrying slide E, cushion g on rod D,
trigger C, and'trigger-spring, said cross-piece Ve being at the front of stick B and said trigger JESSE A. GRANDALL.
