Description

(N0 M0de1.) Q
. J., EVANS.
TOY.
Patented Aug. 8, 1893.
WITNESSES: v r INVENTOR J 1 A Lh rm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN EVANS, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,709, dated August 8, 1893. Application filed October 22, 1892. Serial No. 449,656. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to toys but more especially has reference to such toys as contemplate the discharge of a missile at objects arranged on a board or the like.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective of a toy such as is contemplated by my invention, and Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional elevation of the means which I employ for projecting the missile.
Similar numerals denote like parts in both figures of' the drawings.
1 is a game board having sides 2, and at the end of said board is an inwardly inclined butt I at are objects placed erect on the board and which serve as targets for the missile to be discharged.
5 is a carriage swiveled to the board by means of a screw 6, and 7 is a hollow cylindrical tube secured to said carriage.
8 is a plunger having a free movement throughout the interior of said tube, and 9 a shoulder near the rear end of said plunger and adapted to abut against the rear end of the tube.
10 is a small knob at the extreme rear end of the plunger by means of which the latter may be readily pulled back by the hand.
11 is an elastic band passed through a hole 12 in the rear end of the plunger and secured as to its ends to any stationary part, as the carriage 5, so that it will be readily understood that when the plunger is drawn back and released it will be shot forward by the resiliency of said band 11.
The extreme forward end of the plunger has a ledge 13 integral therewith and projecting forward, in normal position, from the lower side of said plunger beyond the mouth of the tube 7. 14 is the missile which is placed on the said ledge preparatory to drawing back the plunger.
I do not claim any novelty in any of the parts hereinbefore described except in respect to the inwardly inclined butt and the projecting ledge.
The provision of theledge insures the drawing back of the missile. with the plunger, the result being that when the latter is released the missile will be thrown in a more direct line and with far greater accuracy than if said missile were simply placed in the mouth of the tube and driven therefrom by theimpact of the plunger. A missile supported on said ledge and projected by the full throw of the plunger is very accurate in its flight at a range of two yards, whereas if such missile were simply placed in the tube and projected by the impact of the plunger, the total flight of said missile would frequently be not over six or eight inches, while the accuracy of the missile is more chance.
The inclined butt prevents the missile and the objects 4 from rebounding over the end of the board.
I claim-- 1. In a toy, the toy gun barrel, a spring actuated plunger therein of greater length than the barrel, said plunger having a ledge which projects from its lower side and in front of the toy gun barrel when the plunger is in its forward position, so that the projectile may be placed on said'ledge and the plunger then drawn back to carry the projectile within the barrel, all substantially as described.
2. A toy game apparatus, consisting essentially of a board with an inclined butt or stop at one end, target figures to rest on the board, and a toy gun swiveled to'the board at the end remote from said butt, said gun having a spring plunger provided with a ledge at its lower edge which ledge projects from the gun when the plunger is in forward position, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN EVANS. Witnesses:
